It’s the weekend of chocolate bunnies, colored eggs, and jelly beans for the children!!

It’s also a celebration for Passover and Resurrection Sunday; which includes family get togethers and visits to churches and synagogues.

How did an Irish saint’s day become an American thing?

According to PBS; the short answer - Irish people came to America and brought their culture with them. St Patrick’s Day observances date back to before the founding of the USA - in places like Boston and New York City. The first parade was held in Manhattan in 1762.

My favorite Irish Lass is sporting her Irish dress and a shamrock drinking cup; while my dog has on her Irish bandanna.

Now that St Patrick’s Day Weekend is over and tomorrow is actually St Patrick’s Day - here are some interesting religious facts:

March 17th - St Patrick’s Day

FEAST DAY: Historically, it was a quiet religious occasion in Ireland. Since it falls during Lent, it was a day where restrictions on eating meat were typically lifted, allowing for a feast.

ST PATRICK’S STORY: Patrick was a Christian missionary who was brought to Ireland as a slave, escaped, and later returned to preach Christianity. (According to history.com)

THE SHAMROCK & THE TRINITY: Legend states that St Patrick used the three-leaf shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity - the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - illustrating how they can be separate yet one.

ST PATRICK’S BREASTPLATE: A well-known lorica, or prayer for protection, is traditionally attributed to him, focusing on Christ’s presence in all things. (Ligonier Ministries)

FORMALIZATION: It was added to the Catholic liturgical calendar in the early 17th century. (History.com)

Green Beer & River Dyeing: Drinking green-dyed beer is popular in North America, while cities like Chicago dye their rivers green.

Symbols: The shamrock is worn on the lapel, representing the holy trinity according to St Patrick, or just a general symbol of luck and Irish pride 🍀

Leprechaun Traps: A popular children’s activity involving building traps to catch a leprechaun, based on the folklore that they might share their pot of gold.

Wearing Green: Symbolizes Ireland and is believed to make you invisible to leprechauns

Parades: Major celebrations, with notable parades in Dublin, New York, Chicago, and Pittsburgh, featuring marching bands, bagpipes, and Irish dancers

Traditional Foods: While not originally Irish, corned beef and cabbage is the standard American tradition, often paired with Irish soda bread, which is sometimes marked with a cross to “let the devil out”.

Thanks to all of our wonderful patients and patient’s families; Chip from the Lions Club picked up over 40 pair of used hearing aids to be sent to the Lions Club’s hearing aid lab to be refurbished. Once these aids are put through quality control; they will find a new home in someone’s ears!
