Fetal and newborn nutrition is often overlooked in conversations about liver health but it shouldn’t be.

What happens during pregnancy and the first months of life helps shape a child’s metabolism, organ development, and long-term risk for conditions like fatty liver disease. Early exposure to high sugar, gestational diabetes, poor-quality diets, and even environmental chemicals can begin influencing liver health before a baby is even born.

Our newest infographic highlights why maternal nutrition, breastfeeding, and safe feeding choices matter, not just for infancy, but for lifelong liver outcomes.

🌱 Prevention starts earlier than most people realize. Because liver health begins at the very beginning.

Today on , we honor the quiet heroes among us. 💙 Caregivers show up every day with strength, patience, and compassion…often behind the scenes, often without recognition.

At Liver Education Advocates, we know liver disease impacts entire families. Caregivers are advocates, encouragers, coordinators, and steady anchors in the hardest seasons.

We especially recognize Betsy Villiotti, devoted caregiver to Tony Villiotti, co-founder of LEA, and manager of our Liver Disease Support Group. Betsy’s resilience and unwavering love inspire our entire community.

Betsy, and caregivers everywhere, we see you. We value you. We are deeply grateful.

Do you or someone you love have fatty liver disease?

This was the very first infographic we ever created at Liver Education Advocates and it’s still the one people share the most.

We made the Fatty Liver Roadmap for one simple reason: Fatty liver disease can be confusing…and no one explains what might happen next.

This visual guide shows how fatty liver can progress over time from MASLD/MASH to fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver cancer, transplant, or even death.

But just as important?
It shows the “exit ramps” - the points where things can still be slowed, stopped, or even reversed. 🙌

So many patients and families have told us this roadmap helped them finally understand:
✔️ What’s happening in their body
✔️ What the stages mean
✔️ Why early action matters

We’ve just updated it again! The newest version:
• Includes newly approved medications
• Has a clearer, expanded glossary
• Reflects the latest changes in liver care

We’re committed to keeping this resource simple, accurate, and empowering because knowledge gives people options.

If you’d like a copy, comment “ROADMAP” or visit our website to download it. 💚

This past weekend, on National Donor Day, our very own Betsy Villiotti attended the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) Advocate Kickoff Event.

Betsy has been volunteering with CORE ever since Tony Villiotti received his life-saving transplant in 2018, as a way to honor the incredible donor who made Tony’s second chance possible.

CORE’s work is vital, they support organ donation awareness, help families through the donation process, and make life-saving transplants possible for people in need every single day.

At Liver Education Advocates, this mission is deeply personal. Organ donation doesn’t just save lives, it creates hope, healing, and new beginnings.

💚We’re grateful for Betsy’s continued advocacy and for CORE’s dedication to giving the gift of life.

Today is National Donor Day (February 14)

At Liver Education Advocates, this day is especially meaningful.

Our founder, Tony, is alive today because of the incredible gift of an organ donor.

Because one person said yes to donation, Tony was given a second chance at life and that second chance became a mission to educate, advocate, and support others facing liver disease.

Organ donation isn’t just a statistic…it’s a life saved; it’s a family kept whole; it’s hope.

If you aren’t already an organ donor, please consider registering as an organ donor and giving the ultimate gift: life.

World Cancer Day is more than awareness, it’s a call to action.

For us at Liver Education Advocates, this day is deeply personal.

On March 17, 2017, our founder Tony Villiotti was diagnosed with liver cancer. Exactly one year later, on that same date, he received the life-saving call for a liver transplant which he received the next morning.

Tony was fortunate to have access to SBRT at to treat his cancer as a bridge to transplant…time and care that ultimately saved his life. He does not take that second chance lightly.

Today, liver cancer is one of the fastest-rising cancers worldwide, driven in part by the growing prevalence of fatty liver disease, a condition that is often silent and underdiagnosed until it’s advanced.

That’s why Liver Education Advocates (LEA) exists.

We advocate for early detection, increase awareness, and provide education about liver health, especially the critical connection between fatty liver disease and liver cancer.

Early detection saves lives. Education and equal access to care changes outcomes. No one should be diagnosed too late.

Gina Madison and Maria C. Hernandez Mora braved this frigid Pittsburgh weather today to represent Liver Education Advocates at for the Wellness Expo! Our team’s first in-person event for 2026 and it’s been busy and people are always fascinated to learn all about liver health. Sadly we’ve also already met too many people who have been affected by liver disease directly or family/friends.

Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the enduring call he gave us to live lives of service, justice, and compassion.

At Liver Education Advocates, our work is rooted in that same belief: that putting others first creates real change. We are committed to advancing equity in liver health education and care so that access, early detection, and hope are available to every community.

Dr. King reminded us that impact isn’t measured by titles or success, but by how we show up for others.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” ~Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, we recommit to answering that question through advocacy, education, and action.

We always say, “Eat your fruit, don’t drink it!” The food and drink industry has become big business and there is so much deception around what’s truly healthy and the actual health benefits in what you consume. Its not that smoothies are necessarily bad, but fruit is filled with lots of natural sugar and the fiber combined with the sugar when eating it (versus drinking it which loses the fiber) slows down how quickly the sugar processes through your body making it easier for your liver to filter. If a smoothie is the only way you or your kids can tolerate fruits or veggies that is better than not consuming at all but as often as possible it’s best to eat your fruit versus drinking it.

“Smoothies might be better for you than juice, but not by much according to Professor at Pediatric Endocrinology, UC San Francisco and author of “The Hacking of the American Mind” and “Fat Chance”, Robert Lustig. By pulverizing fruit into a thick paste, you’re losing out on the insoluble fiber and its benefits. Put simply, you’re better off eating fruit than drinking smoothies or juice.”
