Through connections with community organizations, UPMC is breaking down barriers to employment while assembling a stronger workforce.

Since April 2023, UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside has partnered with Phase 4, a private, nonprofit secondary school for disadvantaged and at-risk young people in the Pittsburgh area, to help create pipelines from school to successful employment. Phase 4’s students generally have not been afforded many advantages when it comes to preparing for the working world.

Meet Sherry. She serves as a team lead for Patient Services at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside. Sherry helped to forge a relationship between Phase 4 Learning and UPMC after she benefited from mentorship herself within her department and was looking for ways to pay it forward.

Having that guiding hand along the way, both from Phase 4 and from UPMC, is critical.

“I wanted to help mentor students like I was mentored at UPMC,” explained Sherry, who was part of the first class of mentees. “They always have an option to better themselves, but need guidance to choose the right path. I can show you the right path, but it’s up to you to choose those options to succeed.”

Siblings Tom, Kathy, and Dennis Vaughan have strong ties to Pittsburgh and UPMC Mercy.

Their great-aunt was Sister Mary Ferdinand Clark, Mercy’s legendary hospital administrator from 1953 – 1978. Their grandfather, Harry Vaughan – Sister Ferdinand’s half-brother – worked as Mercy’s elevator operator for many years. And their great-aunt Grace was Sister Ferdinand’s executive assistant at Mercy for many years.

Growing up in Maryland, the Vaughan siblings visited family here in Pittsburgh each year always enjoyed seeing their grandfather and great-aunts in action at the hospital; they also have fond memories of riding streetcars and attending baseball games. Tom and Kathy have their own Mercy connections as well; Tom worked as a surgical orderly there one summer, and Kathy graduated from the School of Nursing in 1970.

On June 5, the siblings returned to Mercy for a visit and are pictured here with the portrait of Sister Ferdinand outside Mercy’s Clark Auditorium, which is named in her honor.

June 7, 2024 is Vision Research Day here at the UPMC Vision Institute, when we celebrate scientific discovery and the work our scientists do each day to advance vision care. Dr. Morgan DiLeo, Philip Harding, Dr. James Westbay, and Dr. Xin Fan (all pictured), along with their colleagues Madison Butler, Allison Redhair, and Ethan Fletcher are finding innovative ways to deliver drugs more efficiently, helping patients stay on their medications and have better outcomes in treatment.

“I really fell in love with the complex and unique nature of the eye and just how meaningful vision is to so many people,” Dr. DiLeo says. “It was so fulfilling and exciting to work in an area that could potentially offer such an improvement in quality of life for patients that I decided to build my career around vision research.”

Through connections with community organizations, UPMC is breaking down barriers to employment while assembling a stronger workforce.

Auberle works with more than 150 referring agencies to accept clients in need of support, including employment training and placement, and partners with more than 200 organizations like UPMC to place those individuals, both teen and adult, with potential employers.

The trainees in the Auberle program rotate through on-the-job experience in various roles to see what they feel most comfortable with and excel at most. It’s important as they consider their career prospects that they understand both their strengths and what makes them truly enjoy their work.

Meet Luke, a food service attendant at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside.

“I like the food service attendant [role] most,” Luke, one of the Auberle trainees at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, explained. “You move around a little more. I have ADHD, so I’ve got to always be moving around.”

The interactions with patients motivate him and keep him going throughout a shift: “One smile could change their whole day.”
