Managed care is an approach to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare, which is becoming more relevant to the field of pharmacy through Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Learning about the principles of managed care will help you develop and prepare for your career, no matter what field of pharmacy you choose to practice! AMCP's Mission: To empower its members to serve society by using sound medication management principles and strategies to improve health care for all. As a pharmacist in Managed Care Pharmacy, you will apply your clinical skills to optimize patient outcomes and lower medication therapy costs for the patient and the healthcare organization! Some of the tasks AMCP’s members perform include:
-- Monitoring the safety and clinical effectiveness of new medications on the market;
-- Alerting patients to potentially dangerous drug interactions when a patient is taking two or more medications prescribed by different providers;
-- Designing and carrying out medication therapy management programs to ensure patients are taking medications that give them the best benefit to keep them healthy;
-- Creating incentives to control patients’ out-of-pocket costs, including through lower copayments on generic drugs and certain preferred brands. These practices, and more, aim to ensure that all patients can receive the medications they need to improve their health while at the same time keeping health care costs under control. On the chapter level, we serve as an outlet for those students who are interested in a career in managed care pharmacy. Meetings will be held roughly once a month and will focus on a topic in managed care. Past speakers have come from UPMC HealthPlan, Walgreen's Specialty Pharmacy, Accredo, and Highmark. The AMCP NEXUS Conference will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 20-23, 2020. Our Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Competition will begin later this fall and will be held in January 2021.

Join us this upcoming Tuesday for our last guest speaker event of the semester! AMCP is having Dr. Eric Culley Vice President of Clinical Pharmacy from UPMC Health Plan on Tuesday, April 12th at noon to talk about opportunities in managed care pharmacy in terms of internships, residencies, and careers followed by a Q&A.

We will be in room 402 or via Zoom. Hope to see everyone there!!

Dr. Culley is responsible for leading the UPMC Clinical Pharmacy Department that includes Clinical Utilization Management, Care Management teams, and product-specific Line of Business teams. These teams are responsible for developing pharmacy strategies, evaluation of clinical pharmacy programs, and improving overall plan performance both for cost and quality. Before joining UPMC, Dr. Culley was the Vice President of the Evolent Health Pharmacy Services enterprise and has held leadership positions at one of the Nation’s largest Blues plans. With over 23 years of pharmacy experience, he has managed multiple aspects of prescription drug benefits for Employee, Commercial, Exchange, Medicare, and Medicaid lines of business. This includes formulary management, establishing quality programs, strategic planning, managing specialty pharmacy for both the drug and medical benefits, as well as maintaining P&L responsibility in previous roles.

Join us this upcoming Tuesday for another exciting guest speaker event! Vanessa Campbell is a Senior Manager on the Clinical Pharmacy team at UPMC Health Plan, who is also one of the co-professors of the Managed Care concepts course. Vanessa oversees a team of clinical pharmacists that focus on care management activities related to disease state education, quality measures, and transitions of care programs. She also works closely with our provider incentive-based programs and how we help to increase performance on pharmacy related measures. Additionally, Vanessa’s team oversees the paid internship program at the Health Plan and student development. As always, we have a zoom link available for those who cannot attend in person. Join us on Tuesday, Nov 2 in Rm 524 at 12PM for our second guest speaker event of the semester! Abigail White is the current PGY-1 Managed Care Pharmacy Resident with CVS Caremark out of the Pittsburgh, PA office. She is a recent graduate from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy where she was a part of the Community Leadership and Innovation Practice area of concentration. Abigail first discovered the field of managed care during her fourth year of pharmacy school through her rotations. She was completely blown away with the number and variety of opportunities for pharmacist. She loved that this area combined both the business side of pharmacy with the clinical side in order to make strategic, cost effective, and clinically sound decisions. Abigail hopes to pursue a client facing role after completion of her residency. Exciting news! AMCP Nexus 2021 will be in Denver, Oct. 19-21! Registration will open in mid-July. If interested, submit your session proposal by April 26 and submit your poster abstract by June 1.
