Using Punishment to try to rehabilitate people who have already suffered years of Punishment doesn't work. In term of addiction, first of all recognize that these people are traumatized and what they need is NOT more trauma and pun
ishment but more Compassion. The first step is understanding that addiction is a disease. Nobody chooses to become an addict/alcoholic. Its a vicious cycle of using, guilt, shame, hope, failure, hopelessness and more. Families think they are hurting them and they are but even more their hurting themselves. It's a cycle that goes around and around. Most addicts core is good, compassionate, funny and good people. The disease creates liars, manipulators, thieves, and abusive behavior. We have to believe the core is good and doesn't want this life. The first step is getting an inside look into the disease and the person. Understanding and compassion doesn't mean enabling their behavior, or them not being accountable for their behavior, But without Judgement, educate yourself to the disease.
