It is with deepest sorrow, but hope in the Resurrection of Christ, that we share with you the passing of our brother, Sergeant (ret.) Michael C. Hayes, 51, of North Fayette Township (Oakdale), PA. Surviving are his high school sweetheart and wife of 26 years Jennifer (Bell) Hayes, and his beloved children Courtney and Michael.

After graduating from West Allegheny High School in 1990, Sergeant Hayes attended the Allegheny County Police Academy. He worked for several local departments in Beaver County, including Raccoon, Independence, and Hanover Townships, and Midland and Monaca Boroughs. He was a huge asset to the communities he served and he made an immediate impact.

Sergeant Hayes ultimately settled into a dream job in his hometown of North Fayette Township, when he was hired as a patrolman in January of 1996. Over the course of the next 25 years, Sergeant Hayes was promoted twice, received numerous commendations, and served as the departmental fi****ms instructor for many years. More than any other accolade, Sergeant Hayes was most proud of the impact he had on students in the West Allegheny School District, as he served in the role of School Resource Officer for several years before retirement. Through his hard work and dedication, Sergeant Hayes molded the lives of countless students in the district. Based on his accomplishments and tireless involvement, Sergeant Hayes was elected the President of the Pennsylvania Association of School Resource Officers.

Sergeant Hayes will be sorely missed by all those that knew him, but we will hold dear the time and experiences we had together. The North Fayette Police Department commends Sergeant Hayes on a life well lived and a career to be modeled. May his memory be eternal.

A mother is suspected of drowning her three children at Coney Island. Around 1:30 a.m. police received a call from a family member making them aware that three children may be in danger.

They believed this after a call from Erin Merdy where she made suspicious remarks about her children’s safety.

Authorities then went to Erin's apartment and ran into the father of one of her children. He told police that the mother was with her children at Coney Island and he had similar concerns.

Police began to search the island for the children and mother when they received a call from another family member. The family member claimed they were with a "soaking wet and barefoot" Erin at the boardwalk.

According to Erin’s family, she called and confessed to drowning her children.

Around 4:30 a.m., the bodies of Oliver, Liliana, and Zachary were found unconscious on the beach. The children were rushed to Coney Island Hospital where they were pronounced deceased.

Erin was also taken to the hospital for evaluation and is currently in police custody for questioning. At this time, she is not answering their questions.

Erin’s family claimed that she was a long-time sufferer of mental illness. They ask the public to have grace and understanding during this time.
Police are determining if postpartum depression played a role in the murders.

While there is no certain motive, Erin and the father of one of her children have been going through a custody battle, on top of her mental illness issues.
May Oliver, Liliana, and Zachary Rest In Peace

Pittsburgh Police from Zone 3 received a ShotSpotter notification for three rounds fired in the 2100 block of Wharton Street just before 3 p.m.
As units arrived on scene, all of the shooters involved had fled from the area.
Initial reports indicated that a female had suffered a gunshot wound, but no victims have been reported at area hospitals.
Officers cleared one business whose windows had been shot out. Witnesses inside the store indicated that a shootout between patrons occurred when two males entered the clothing store and began shooting at two other males who were already inside and fired back.

The two initial actors reportedly fled the store in a silver sedan, while the two males who had been inside, fled out the back exit and down Carson Street.
The Crime Scene Unit is processing all evidence, including camera footage.

Zone 3 detectives are investigating.

It is with a heavy heart that the Robinson Twp. Police Dept announces the passing of Sgt. Scott Patton. “Scotty” has served the Township of Robinson as a police officer for the past 11 years and the last three after being promoted to sergeant. Prior to him becoming a police officer, he served the same residents as a paramedic with Robinson Emergency Medical Services (REMS). Thank you for your years of service to the residents of Robinson Township as you are gone way too soon! Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.
