In the state of New Jersey, Families birth choices are being policed and restricted right before our eyes. This is adding to the abysmal maternal mortality and birth outcomes in a very wealthy state. Midwives of all kinds are highly skilled experts in the reproductive realm. They deserve autonomy and birthing people deserve the freedom to choose how they want to be cared for. Being is far more than supporting a person's right to choose whether or not to have an abortion. In a society that was supposed to be founded on Liberty and Justice for all, it is our right to build our families with dignity, compassion and respect. Overturning Roe V. Wade could potentially be an assault on those rights. For families who conceive through assisted reproductive technologies like IVF, your choice to discard genetically abnormal embryos may become illegal. This is just one aspect of what's at stake when laws are put in place to infringe on our reproductive freedoms as human beings.
For me, being prochoice is about being pro-humanity, pro-compassion, pro-I ain't walked in their shoes so they should do what's best for them!✌🏾

Chasing a busy toddler around causing me to be a little late sometimes😁 Although I am a day off from this guidance is always imperative to know. Compassion goes a long way because behind many smiles are struggles.

I think back to what I was taught about in Jr. High. We spent only one afternoon "learning" about the menstrual cycle. So much of what was taught was incorrect but worst of all, it was used as a scare tactic to prevent teenage pregnancy instead of teaching us about the beauty of and our health. There is a culture built around these misconceptions. We should be normalizing the fluidity of our cycles, and understand that fertility is a vital sign stretching far beyond whether or not we bear children. Fertility is about understanding our bodies, and the health of our entire being.

I didn't trust my body for years.... I felt like it had failed me and wasn't a safe place for the children I conceived. I can't believe I've been feeding this munchkin from the same body that I didn't trust for 10 months inside the womb and 14 months outside. Breastfeeding has helped me to heal physically and even more so emotionally.

In communities of mothers who have only ever had healthy birth outcomes, a bereavement doula is probably not a frequent topic of conversation. I certainly had never heard the term early in my pregnancy with my first daughter.

Finally taking the leap to becoming a evokes a whirlwind of emotions. It's scary, exciting, frustrating at times and certainly humbling. Emotions in tow, I'm doing it because my spirit has been called to this work. It's much bigger than any individual, but it takes individuals working collectively to create a culture around safe and empowered reproductive experiences. Here I am, getting comfortable with this path just as I try to get comfortable in front of the camera
