did you know that baleen whales can store, on average, up to 33 tons of carbon dioxide? whale f***s is also highly productive for the ocean ecosystem! full of iron and other nutrients that phytoplankton rely on to bloom. (power to the poops!)

to protect and restore whale populations is to help revitalize oceans suffering from rising temperatures and acidity levels.

rather than looking outside nature for climate-related solutions, perhaps we turn inward — to existing natural systems and indigenous stewards of both land AND ocean. 🌊💛

happy Wednesday! with collective environmental action, our future is as bright as these dahlias! how are you incorporating collective environmental action into your routine?🌍🌞🌻

psst! here’s some recs from your fav pals:

* knowledge is power - stay informed, share knowledge and discuss climate issues with your friends and coworkers.
* vote with the climate in mind.
* get involved in local politics - attend talks and debates; ask your representatives about how they are addressing climate change.

have you listened to the ? kamea 🌺] keeps us learning and inspired with her critical, intersectional analysis of topics of environmentalism!

“a simple transition from a fossil-fuel dependent economy to a “green energy” powered economy, without uprooting the extractive system itself, will just shift the geopolitics of resource conflicts—away from oil-rich regions to mineral-rich ones.” - kamea 🌺]

How do you view the relationship between individual and collective action?

Though many efforts encouraging sustainable change have been directed towards the individual (which makes sense in a hyper-individualistic, consumer society), we can fall into a trap of isolation and passive consumption.

To effect meaningful positive change, we must encourage collectivism and political action just as much (if not more) than individual change.

Rather, to view the world as the highly interconnected ecosystem we’re apart of💛

tips to make your garden a pollinator paradise 🌱🪴🌿

• plant native plants to support local ecosystems and relationships
• create water sources around your yard for bees, butterflies and birds to stay hydrated (but make sure they have a shallow or sloping side so they don’t drown!)
• incorporate different canopy levels so pollinators can be protected from predators and harsh weather

native pollinators are vital to the success of our gardens, yards, crops and green spaces. learning about the pollinators in your local area can give you an insider look at how the ecosystems operate - plus help your garden flourish and promote biodiversity!

did you know that flights were responsible for 2.4% of global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in 2018 — a figure expected to grow more than threefold by 2050? oof!

how can we help, you ask?!

🌱seek adventure right outside whatever you call home! focus on decreasing your travel, and seek low-emission forms of transportation first! (go out on a whim and plan a bike trip! we think that’s the flyest option out there😉)
🌱carbon offset your flight using
carbonfootprint.com!

comment your favorite planet-related emoji if you are thinking more consciously about travel in 2021😊🌱🌞🌲🌍🐐

we already a week into plastic-free july and we challenge all of the community to do a ~trash audit~

“what’s a trash audit?” you ask? well, it’s just that—take a look in your trash and see what you can do better. pick through it. realize what’s heavily packaged, where you can decrease your waste and overall plastic consumption.

the goal is to understand the waste you’re creating at home and make a plan on how *you* can do better. because remember— “we don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” ~Anne Marie Bonneau

oursimpleco. our story.

we are four female entrepreneurs imperfectly pursuing a truly sustainable lifestyle—one of simplicity, resourcefulness, and activism, rather than one saturated with the newest eco-friendly products. between us, you will find a vegetarian, an Americorps conservation worker, an environmental documentary filmmaker, and a sustainable clothing enthusiast who only purchased secondhand clothing for a year! although we were pursuing an overall lifestyle aligned with our values of protecting the environment, we found ourselves neglecting simple, sustainable habits, such as packing our reusable bags, eating seasonally, or turning off the lights and appliances when not in use. these are habits that, if identified and redirected, have the potential for an even greater impact and positive systemic change.

we turned toward the internet for more information. why is it so easy to neglect these simple habits? while there is so much environmental information available today, it is overcrowded by business attempts to capture the conscious consumer and false stereotypes about sustainability. instead of finding clarity and confidence, we felt overwhelmed with no sense of direction. with hours of thorough research into individual behavior change and sustainability under our belt, we knew we had to share our valuable information and resources- but in a simple, digestible manner. and it just so happens that the most sustainable practices for the earth are rooted in simplicity!

born out of our desire for simplicity, transparency, and inclusivity in sustainability, we created oursimpleco: a 30-day email newsletter with targeted information and resources in order to build simple, sustainable habits in different areas of our lives (in our home, food, beauty, closet, garden, and community).

by breaking down sustainable living into simple and digestible steps in one easy location, oursimpleco provides a pathway to follow, a community with shared interests, and identifies goals to achieve in the process. oursimpleco hopes to be a space that sparks thoughtful curiosity about living lightly on this Earth and its delightful side-effect, rejoicing in the shared lightness it creates in our souls. we want to influence 2 people, who influence 2 more, and so on…
