The holidays don’t always look the way the movies show them.
And that’s okay. 🤍

For neurodivergent children and families, communication may look different.
Excitement may be quieter, or louder.
Unwrapping gifts might be slow, fast, methodical, or skipped altogether.

There may be scripts instead of small talk.
Movement instead of sitting still.
Breaks instead of full schedules.

But joy is still there.
Connection is still there.
Memories are still being made, just in ways that honor each child’s nervous system, communication style, and needs.

This season, let’s widen our definition of what “holiday magic” looks like.
Let’s make room for differences without trying to fix or rush them.
Because when children feel safe, accepted, and understood, that is the real gift. 🎁

Don’t hide! Don’t fake it! Every child deserves to communicate confidently!

Stuttering isn’t just nerves, it’s rooted in brain networks, genes and neuro-motor timing. Science now shows strong genetic links and brain-cell involvement. Yet too often therapy treats stuttering like a flaw to be erased.

Between 2½ and 5 years old, many children go through a stage of increased disfluency, repeating sounds, words, or phrases, or pausing as they search for words.
This often happens when language is rapidly developing and a child’s expressive skills can’t quite keep up with their ideas.

Typical disfluencies may include:

Whole-word or phrase repetitions (“I-I-I want juice” or “Can we-can we go?”)

Interjections (“um,” “uh”)

Revisions (“I want—can I have a cookie?”)

Brief pauses or restarts

At Coastal Speech, we believe treatment must begin with acceptance: your voice matters now, stuttering and all. From there we build communication confidence, tools, and speech comfort ethically and collaboratively. Because the goal isn’t perfection, it’s honest, empowered speech.
