Trigger warning: birth trauma

After spending the past several years working intimately with new families as a postpartum doula, it became glaringly clear that many of us are carrying birth trauma without even realizing it.

If you have unresolved moments from your birth that you are having trouble processing or letting go of, I’d be happy to recommend some resources — just send me a DM, or reach out via the link in bio. 🤍

If there’s one thing on every new parent’s mind, it’s sleep. Swipe right for a few of my favorite tips to maximize your shuteye. (Spoiler alert, I intentionally left out the whole “limit screen time” bit, because we all know that’s not a thing when you’ve got a newborn.) 💤

Let’s be real, this has never been about the babies. If it were about the babies, people would not be having to dilute their formula because they can’t afford that second container. They wouldn’t have to reuse old diapers. There would be ample childcare options. Teachers and caretakers would be respected, and paid a decent salary.

Call it what it is: a nasty power grab, designed to strip women of their rights.

If you truly believe that folks should not have access to abortions, I would strongly encourage you to get still, grab a mirror, and ask yourself “why” And then whatever the answer is to that question, ask yourself “why” again. And do it again and again until you drill down to the real reason that you don’t think a human being should have bodily autonomy.

This is such a critical time in history, and your time/money/voice is needed in a bad way.

If you have the means, here are some organizations doing the very important work of protecting reproductive rights and ensuring that they are accessible to all.

Finally taking heed of my own advice a little here, and it feels good. Rest can take many different forms depending on the moment and person you’re talking to. Most recently, for me, it’s been resting from media. I’ve decreased my news consumption, which has had a notable impact on my mental health. (Highly recommended!)

I also really wasn’t feeling inspired to make content, so, I stopped for a bit. The hardest part has actually been trying to release any judgment that I have directed at myself for saying “not today.” But you know what, it feels great, and I’m going to keep listening to that little inner voice who knows what’s up.

Also, big props to all the people out there cranking out content on the regular. It’s A TON of work and most of y’all didn’t actually sign up to be content creators. So I hope you’re recognizing your efforts AND being gentle with yourself when you just don’t wanna.

Celebrating our Mother Earth today and always. Thank you, , .nature.atelier, and for these amazing Earth Day kits!

One of my favorite ways to honor our planet during the postpartum period is to make sure all of the “things” we buy and receive get used as long as possible, by as many people as possible. Whether passing along outgrown items to friends and family, or offering them up on local Buy Nothing groups, “reusing” helps us all.

MONDAY MOOD.

Next time you’re stressing over all of the things you *think* you absolutely must get done, stop and ask yourself these three questions:

1. Have I taken care of myself today?
2. Does this thing need to be done right now?
3. Does this thing need to be done by me?

So often, the arbitrary deadlines can actually wait. Start with yourself. You matter a hell of a lot more than those dishes ever will.

You literally hold the key to their whole damn pyramid. 🔑

While I innately understand how daunting this can feel, there’s also SO much power in it. Your voice, scent and touch are all they need to feel a sense of love and belonging. Your arms are their safe place and more importantly, the starting point for the secure attachment that they’ll carry with them throughout their lives and into their adult relationships.

As for the self-actualization, I would argue that they come into this world with that peg in place. Perhaps they’re actually here to teach us that bit. 🤷🏻‍♀️

TL/DR: Don’t overthink this. You are literally meeting every need of your baby, simply by being you and being there.🤍

I heard this quoted during the x interview on Unlocking Us, and it really stuck with me.

So often, as parents (especially of new babes), we feel this need to accomplish ALL OF THE THINGS, because that’s what we’re used to being able to do. Alas, this “manufactured pressure” (as I’m going to start calling it) isn’t helping us. Simply showing up each day for your child and keeping them fed, loved, and alive is QUITE the accomplishment. (It’s literally life-saving work!)

So let’s let go of the unrealistic expectations and start setting smaller, more doable goals for ourselves; shall we?
