Title: The Healing Power of Horses: Integrating Traditional Therapy with Equine-Assisted Services in Mental Health Treatment and Learning

Featuring: Dr. Rebecca Wara-Goss interviewed by Dr. Dulce Garcia-Morman
Length: 1 hr 7 min

In this heart-centered and insight-rich interview, Dr. Rebecca Wara-Goss—licensed therapist, transpersonal psychologist, and founder of Eudaemonia Equine Connections, Inc.® —offers a rare glimpse into the transformative role horses play in mental health. Speaking with friend and colleague Dr. Dulce Garcia-Morman, she explores the nuanced differences between traditional talk therapy and equine-assisted services (EAS) approaches, especially in supporting trauma recovery, PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

Listeners will discover how horses accelerate trust and healing through their silent, somatic presence, allowing clients to bypass the verbal masks often worn in human relationships. Dr. Rebecca explains why equine therapy is so powerful for veterans, at-risk youth, and individuals with complex trauma—shedding light on attachment, shame, dissociation, and the nervous system.

With grounded clarity and deep empathy, Dr. Rebecca also shares her emotional story of losing her beloved therapy horse “Dancer”, and the unexpected spiritual bond that followed with “Autumn”, a golden flaxen-mane mare who now carries forward the healing mission. Through this connection, Dr. Rebecca found not only personal solace but renewed purpose—and current hopes to raise enough through the “Seen Through Horses Campaign” to make “Autumn”’s care permanent.

This video interview was originally recorded for Dr. Dulce Garcia-Morman’s author submission to The Eden Magazine’s May 2024 edition—a feature exploring equine-assisted mental health through the lens of lived experience, therapeutic insight, and healing connection with horses.

Video/Audio Timestamped Highlight Moments:

[00:00–06:00] – What makes equine-assisted therapy different from traditional therapy: outdoor settings, equine presence, and a break from the clinical model

[06:00–13:00] – Horses as emotional catalysts: how their nonverbal, intuitive nature helps clients feel safe, regulate emotions, and access vulnerability

[13:00–21:00] – Veterans and trauma: the unique “battle buddy” bond horses create with those experiencing PTSD and military-related trauma

[21:00–30:00] – Which mental health conditions equine therapy supports best—and when it may not be the right fit (e.g., severe phobias, psychosis, or safety concerns)

[30:00–38:00] – Somatic healing in action: how equine work helps clients reconnect to their bodies, navigate dissociation, and process stored trauma

[38:00–47:00] – The importance of treatment planning, ethical clarity, and how to distinguish equine therapy from equine-assisted learning or coaching

[47:00–59:00] – A deeply moving story: losing therapy horse Dancer and the soul-level connection that followed with Autumn, a healing bond born in grief

[59:00–1:07:00] – Vision and vulnerability: Dr. Rebecca’s dream to officially bring Autumn into the nonprofit family and train her as a full therapy partner

New Video Release — “Truffles”’ Story”, In Loving Tribute
Only 3-Days Left to Give!

We’re honored to share a new short YouTube video, narrated by Founder/Executive Director, Dr. Rebecca Wara-Goss, LMFT, Ph.D, that tells the story of “Truffles”, one of our most beloved therapy horses. This 4-minute tribute highlights her healing legacy and the powerful lessons she left behind—about trust, boundaries, and unconditional care. She was a mirror, a mentor, and a quiet force of healing. Through gentle eye contact, grounded presence, and a deep well of wisdom shaped by her own transformation, she supported countless individuals on their mental health journeys.

“Truffles” wasn’t just a therapy horse—she was our Black Beauty, our gentle guardian, and a powerful teacher. She helped anxious hearts find calm, offered quiet presence instead of pressure, and taught us that healing isn’t about perfection—it’s about authenticity, presence, openness to change, and honoring who we are, moment by moment.

“Truffles”’ story, and the lives she touched, are at the heart of this year’s Horses for Mental Health "Seen Through Horses 2025 Campaign".

As of today, we’ve raised $1076 of our $3,000 goal, and we have just 3 days left to reach it.

Watch the YouTube video now and let her story move you.
