Asters. Cold-hardy (easy to grow) perennials that have daisy-like flowers. September's birth flower is the Aster. Asters have a meaning of patience, love, daintiness and good luck.

🩷Sea Thrift Flowers💜

🌺Whilst at my parent’s house, I gazed upon these gorgeous eye popping flowers!🌸

🌱Evergreen perennial that produce beautiful clusters of pink🩷to lavender💜to white.🤍

Forms a dense mounded grass-like tuft of dark green leafy foliage underneath the beautiful blooming flower clusters.🌺 🌸

🌞Loves full sun!☀️But tolerates partial shade.⛅️

🐛Practically disease & pest free! Deer🦌resistant. Attracts bees🐝 & butterflies.🦋

Great for borders, ground cover, edging, rock🪨gardens, coastal🌊gardens, & in-pots!🪴

🍃Hop-Hornbeam💚

🌳Whilst walking in SE Portland, I discovered this beautiful slow growing hard wooded deciduous tree with dangling “fruits” that are nutlets contained in hop-like papery sacks.

🌳Hop hornbeam is an ornamental landscape tree that tolerates dry & shade areas. It also has the ability to live in stressful urban environments, like Portland.

🌳There is not much use for the hop-hornbeams in current modern-day medicine, but the Native Americans had used it to treat toothache & sore muscles, coughs, kidney disease, & tuberculosis.

🌳Nowadays, hop-hornbeam’s hard-durable wood is utilized for manufacturing tool handles, fence posts, & fueling your fire.🔥Back in the day, this hardwood was used to make yokes for oxen.🐂

🍃The hop-looking “fruits” can be dried & used in decor for a pop of light green color.💚

🤳🙃My attempt at taking a selfie while sprinkling diatomaceous earth over my garden🪴

☝🏻Trying a lot of new “things” this year…here’s one of them! Let me know your thoughts!💭

🌏Diatomaceous earth🌎
—>Non-toxic / non-chemical way to control pests in the garden.🌶️🥬🧅🍅🫑🥔
—>Works against all insect pests by dehydrating them on contact (flies, aphids, & ants). Insects🐜will also tend to avoid previously treated areas.
—>Rids maggots in compost & manure.🐛
—>Discourages🐀rodents🐭while keeping down mite populations!
—>Use: Dust infested plants or areas of concern with powder or mix with H2O💧& use in sprayer. 🌱
—>Use with other substrates in soil🪴to help root zones increase porosity, drainage, & circulation.

The vivid blossoms of Dianthus barbatus, the sweet William, is an ornamental & edible flowering plant. Its sweet nectar 🌸 attracts birds, 🐦 bees, 🐝 & butterflies 🦋. The origin of the name Sweet William is unknown, but some people suggest the name was said to honour the 18th century Prince 👑 William, duke of Cumberland.
