Tiffany visited the Talking Books and Braille Center on the 2nd floor at the San Francisco Public Library and got an in-depth tour of their accessible reading and tech services.

Their large collection includes books in braille, large print, audio, digital, and other formats. Many different ways to access reading materials. They also offer digital literacy classes for patrons.

Here are a few assistive technology tools available for public use:
*Computer rooms with screen reading, low vision, and auditory reading tools. These include OCR scanners for printed text.
*Desktop magnifiers
*A braille embosser, which is a machine that prints raised dots on paper. Embossers can be expensive, and many people do not have personal access to them.

After visiting Deaf Services, Tiffany was directed upstairs and met Tom, who generously shared time and walked her through the services offered.

Check out your library to see what assistive technology they might have!

Thank you again to the SFPL for the tour!

Tiffany stopped by the San Francisco Public Library and got a quick but impressive look at their Deaf Services Center.

In addition to a large library and journal collection, they offer assistive technology that’s open to the public. Here are a few examples:
*Public use video phone from Sorenson
*Public use TTY (with a large vintage model also on display)
*A computer with a low vision camera, large-print keyboard, and accessibility software
*Stations to watch sign language videos or any videos in the collection

Check out your local library to see what assistive tech they might have.

Thank you to SFPL, Michelle, and Jerry for the warm welcome and the tour!

What’s in your outreach kit?

This little orange suitcase has seen a lot of travel across Alaska! Tiffany can setup an exhibit table in 20 min (if not bringing equipment).

What are your tips for outreach travel and exhibit booths?

Tiffany’s:
1. Hard sided suitcase

2. Small and light promo items
(On the table: Smiley “you are awesome” pens, change access notepads, and popping fidgets)

3. Foldable flyer holders
(Con: bought new brand and they keep falling over)

Alaska’s nonprofit sector, which includes more than 5,600 nonprofits and almost 40,000 workers, generates $4 billion in the state each year.

“We have no county system of government, so nonprofits fill the roles that governments would play in any other state,” said The Foraker Group president and CEO Laurie Wolf in 2021. “They provide direct services—they are the utility company, the telephone company, the fire department, the libraries in many communities across Alaska… While many Alaskans think that it’s private industry or government doing the work, nonprofits are actually the backbone of the state.”
