It has been some time since my last professional post but I wanted to share an exciting update that I will be moving into a new role as an Interventional Psychiatrist. I am excited at the prospect of how TMS, Ketamine and other procedural modalities can help the general and treatment resistant population. I am hoping to find new applications to sports psychiatry around brain injury, pain, and other mental health maladies, especially where medications fall short (or cause too many issues). Let’s do this!

The Midnight Library is a refreshing fictional depiction of depressed woman’s opportunity to try out different lives based on her many regrets. Even with the chance to live out certain fantasies, her happiness came down to finding meaning/purpose to just feel content with life. In referencing Thoreau’s quote “it’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see”, I recognize the power of perception and perspective. Knowing those can be difficult to grasp when one feels down and out, perhaps that is how we can be most helpful to one another.

After finally starting to look over my maintenance of certification article choices, I stumbled upon this Medical Ethics paper (see link in bio) that greatly summarized the differences and often clashing virtues of autonomy, do no harm, the importance of one’s intention when faced with decisions that ultimately can lead to harm, and how we can grapple with active versus passive consequences. There is discussion around topics of euthanasia, vaccines, abortion and war. It’s not a difficult read and may help you view things from a different lens—also now I have a better understanding of deontological versus utilitarianism

Chatter by Ethan Kross illustrates how our inner critic can get in the way and how we can better manage that. There was an interesting point of how talking in the first person (“I language”) can be shrouded in negative connotations, but trying emotional distancing (e.g., talking in the 2nd or 3rd person using “you” or even your own name) can help quiet the thoughts. I also liked the topic around sports rituals as a means of compensatory control to impose order on situations and reduce distractions. An easy read/listen worth your time!

I loved Set Boundaries, Find Peace by . An easy to follow book with informative exercises and pearls for clinicians, patients, and everyday people. Boundary issues can present “disguised as issues with self care, conflicts with other people, and trouble with time management.” Setting Boundaries can be ways to “safeguard overextending yourself, self-care practice, communicate your needs, create healthy relationships and clarity”. This book is good for reading now and a reminder to your future self.

Brain on Fire is an engaging narrative of a woman’s journey with a very rare disease. The story reminded me of the importance of truly listening to the patient and any relevant collateral info (talking to family and partners when possible) to get a more complete picture. Also to appreciate an evolving presentation and to not just stay in one’s lane when everything doesn’t quite make sense. Honestly a great read/listen for doctors and med students.
