is a licensed acupuncturist, certified Qigong instructor from the Ling Gui International Qigong school, sound healer, musician, Reiki master, teacher, and space holder. Kat (They/Them) is a licensed acupuncturist having graduated from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM) in 2023 with a dual masters and doctoral degree in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. Originally from New York, Kat left their decade’s long role as co-owner and CTO of a digital branding agency in 2019 and moved to Portland to pursue their dream of helping others through acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage, and Qigong. This dream was born out of personally seeing the effects of the opioid crisis on friends and family members as well as their own experience of using acupuncture to manage their lifelong chronic back pain. Kat thrives at treating the mind, body, and spirit of each patient they see simultaneously. They believe strongly that a compassion driven approach to clinical care is sometimes the most important medicine that a patient needs to feel seen and safe in addressing their health concerns. Kat practices a mixed style of acupuncture drawing upon Applied Channel Theory, TCM, and Japanese meridian therapy styles; adjusting their approach to fit each patient's needs. In addition they incorporate herbal therapy, Japanese sotai alignment exercises, shiatsu massage, cupping, moxibustion, Reiki, and Qigong into their treatments as needed. Kat is a certified Qigong instructor through the Ling Gui International Healing Qigong school where they study with world renowned qigong practitioner Master Liu He. Prior to this Kat studied Kempo, Goju Ryu, and Shotokan styles of karate starting at the age of six with their highest rank being 2nd degree black belt. Kat currently teaches Qigong weekly in southeast Portland and at various events and festivals. Kat is an avid student of the Yi Jing (I Ching) and daoism whose philosophies permeate everything they do. In 2018, Kat became a certified Reiki master teacher through the Glowing Heart Reiki school and has on occasion attuned others to Reiki. They have been a musician focusing on percussion for most of their life and currently offer sound baths alongside their wife Sarah Rayne through her organization Firebird Healing Arts. In addition, Kat and Sarah perform under the band name Deer Friend, which released their first album in winter of 2023. Kat also enjoys gardening, offering reasonably-priced digital and marketing consultations to nonprofits and small businesses, camping, biking, seeing live music, and flow arts.

Are you a Reiki practitioner in the Portland area interested in learning the basics of Chinese medical theory and how to apply it to your Reiki practice?

Please take a moment to fill out this poll I'm running to determine interest and availability for such a course.

About my intentions for this class:

Back when I was first learning Reiki, many years ago, I would often dwell on the nature of Reiki and how it related to another concept I had heard about called Qi or Ki. Reiki had been taught to me as "universal life force energy" while Qi had been described as our "personal life force." I wanted to know how Qi was related to how our bodies, minds, and spirits manifested health and disease and how Reiki practitioners could interact with Qi to bring a person into a state of balance. I wanted to know how Qi flowed through our bodies and most importantly where our Qi ended and Reiki began.

All of these questions eventually brought me to my doctoral studies in Chinese medicine and acupuncture where I was given these answers and introduced to so much more. While I no longer see clients for Reiki treatments, Reiki is imbued in everything I do as a licensed acupuncturist and herbal healer. I am now ready to share a project with the world that has been on my mind for some time.

I am excited to announce my new workshop: Chinese Medicine for Reiki Practitioners

This workshop will be rooted in Daoist wisdom and Qigong practice as I explore the basics of key concepts from Chinese medicine in a way that will help to expand and deepen your Reiki practice. Topics will include the polarity of Yin and Yang, the functions and movements of Qi and other vital substances in our body, and the wisdom of the 5-elemental phases, the 12-primary organs, 12-primary and 8-extraordinary channels, the causes of disease in Chinese medicine, and the art of diagnosis and developing treatment strategies. I will also share techniques I have learned from the practice of Qigong that can be employed in Reiki treatments to be very intentional with how we interact with someone's Qi as well as practice time.

Hello! We are soon going to schedule a Chinese Medicine for Reiki Practitioners intensive workshop with Dr. Kat Brady, LAc. This workshop will be open to all certified Reiki Practitioners. In my own clinical experience I have seen numerous times that acupuncture was able to reverse or manage peripheral neuropathy from a variety of causes. Grateful to the Acupuncture Now Foundation for rais8ng awareness of this!

"BR: The looming rise in diabetes cases, projected to reach 39.7 million adults in the U.S. by 2030,1 underscores the future challenge of peripheral neuropathy (PN). And that figure doesn’t include chemo-induced and idiopathic peripheral neuropathies.

MB: Exactly. The diabetes epidemic is also causing a PN epidemic, as 30% of all diabetics and 50% of diabetics over 65 develop PN. Add to that chemotherapy and HIV/AIDS PN and then the millions of unknown origin or idiopathic PN sufferers, and the numbers are startling. These are all referred to as stocking-and-glove PN, as the lower legs and hands are where the pain and numbness mainly take place.

And there is no cure? No. There are some drugs that give limited relief for PN pain, but none that can reverse the nerve damage associated with PN that not only causes pain, but many other symptoms, especially the numbness that is the main factor behind complications like foot sores in diabetics.

Tell me about your experiences treating PN. I had been treating PN since the 1980s with good success. Even though I am an intuitive acupuncturist who finds points by feel, I was finding the same points on different PN patients. I eventually developed a five-point formula for treating PN in the feet and three-point formula for treating PN in the hands, achieving 80-plus percent success rates. When I decided to put together an online course to teach my protocols, I did a review of the research on acupuncture for PN and was amazed by what I found. That’s when the idea of the Acupuncture Now Foundation (ANF) mounting a campaign to increase awareness that acupuncture is the best treatment for PN was born."

Author’s Note: I recently sat down with Matthew Bauer, who has been in practice since 1986. He is the president of the Acupuncture Now Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating people about the benefits of acupuncture; and author of the book Making Acupuncture Pay: Real-World Ad...
