At long last, I am officially fully vaccinated, and you can once again see my unmasked cheeks inflating like those of a walrus. freshly awakened from hibernation.

Going unmasked at indoor events, no matter how crowded, is now deemed safe for fully vaccinated people (as per the CDC).

Of course, when I’m not piping I’ll continue to social distance and wear a mask. And as the bagpipe is truly the “original social distancing instrument” I can still be the “piper in the distance”, and the sound will surely travel over the hills and safely into your event.

I know many out there have had to delay very important events (such as funerals and weddings) for a very long time, make numerous sacrifices, and I truly feel for you. The live music and entertainment industry was definitely not spared either, not to mention the first official quarantine in Portland took effect on St. Patrick’s Day 2020. Here’s to a giant leap towards a return to normalcy!

Fun fact: the photo here is the first I ever took when considering starting a piping business 19 YEARS AGO, folks. Photo location: mom’s backyard.

After performing for sixteen years in the rain in Portland, OR, I’ve moved my business down to LA so I can begin the next chapter of my professional life: perpetual sunburn.

The highland games can be a taxing day, so it's important to have a healthy, hearty, and traditional Scottish breakfast beforehand.

How fitting that my ancestry.com DNA results just came in, and the question has finally been answered: I'm 44% Scotch/Irish!

This St. Pat's, for your entertainment and mine, I'm going to tally how many times I receive certain questions, and update it on the fly!

"Freebird!" | 1

"How long have you been playing?" | 5

"Know any AC/DC!?" | 4

"So what's under the kilt?" | 0

*Unsolicited kilt raises* | 0

"So are you actually Scottish?" | 2

"What's your clan/tartan?" | 0

*Someone obnoxiously taking a selfie w/me while I'm playing* | 2

"I used to know a piper named ____ back where I grew up in ____! Do you know him?" | 1

"...but what do you do for work other than this?" (because apparently being a full-time musician and actually making a living is unfathomable for many) | 2

*Someone obliviously asking me to play the same tune I just finished playing* | 2

"Can you please, please play something / Do you even know how to play that!?" (immediately after playing for ten minutes straight) | 5

Note: most of these questions/actions don't annoy me and I'm definitely not trying to complain or discourage people from talking to me or other musicians (most of the time I enjoy and welcome the conversation). I just find it a little amusing how often these can happen!

Possibly the best picture of me piping ever taken (probably because it's from behind).

Performing "Auld Lang Syne" for the third year in a row at Trinity Episcopal's New Years Eve concert. Always a pleasure to play alongside such talented musicians!
