Do you feel like your child on the autism spectrum is grazing all day long?

Here are 3 reasons they may be!!

#1 A sensory craving - They are looking for foods to satisfy a sensory craving therefore they eat more foods to get more sensory input.

#2 Not eating at meals - They are grazing throughout the day in order to make up for those nutrients. Getting protein, good fats, and fiber at mealtimes can help keep them full!

#3 Struggle with interoception - i.e. the ability to sense and interpret internal signals from the body, such as heart rate, hunger, and pain. And they could actually be struggling with that! Balancing meals and mindfulness exercises can help!

#4 Parasites and yeast in the gut may be driving eating, especially choices like simple carbs (rice, potatoes, bread, sweets).
👉🏼 Are you just getting started with nutrition for your child on the spectrum? If you’re feeling overwhelmed, know you’re not alone - there is a LOT of information out there, and it can be really confusing.

Comment YES if you would like to try or have tried a gluten-free diet for your child!

A gluten-free diet can be incredibly helpful for some children with autism, though it’s important to first evaluate gluten sensitivity to see if it’s the right fit.

🧩 Gluten, found in wheat, barley, and rye, as well as many processed foods, can cause gut issues, which in turn may affect behaviors and sensory sensitivities.

For some children, gluten isn’t digested properly, creating opiate-like substances that leak into the bloodstream and impact brain function, causing brain fog, mood swings, addiction to gluten, and more. 🌾🚫

Many children with autism also experience food sensitivities, including wheat, which can lead to bloating, headaches, fatigue, and trouble sleeping—factors that may contribute to challenging behaviors like anger and hyperactivity.

A gluten-free diet can help reduce these symptoms! 🌱

🔑 It’s recommended to try a gluten-free diet for 4-6 weeks, but many see the best results after 3+ months. Some parents have reported improved behaviors within 2-3 days!

👉 When shopping, read labels carefully! Check allergen information for wheat, and review the ingredient list for hidden gluten.

By fueling the body with the right nutrients, we can support children with autism in processing proprioceptive input more effectively, helping them feel more grounded and coordinated. 💪✨

Could the food your child is eating be making their autism symptoms worse?

🍔 Processed foods
🟥 Artificial food colors
❌ Preservatives
🍫 Synthetic chemicals
🍿 Additives

The list goes on and on!

🌿 Since when did we let food companies load up our kids’ meals with these harmful chemicals? Why not stick to real, whole foods?

⚗️ I think it’s the food industry pushing these additives, all while ignoring their harmful effects on our children’s behavior and health!

🧠 The problem is, artificial colors and preservatives mess with the nervous system, making things worse—leading to irritability, hyperactivity, and trouble focusing, especially in kids with autism.

So, what can we do?

🥦 Choose whole, unprocessed foods, free from additives.
🍎 Focus on clean, nutrient-rich options that support brain health.
🌳 Try whole foods & healthy snacks instead!

Many parents of children with autism long to hear their child speak 🗣️, but verbal communication can often be one of the last things to develop.

While communication devices and other tools can help, hearing your child say “I love you” 💖 or “How are you, Grandma?” is something every parent treasures.

If you're looking for ways to support speech development, try these cross-crawl exercises that involve crossing the midline 🏃‍♂️.

Start by assessing if your child crosses their midline. This means, can they touch their right hand to their left knee❓

🔗If they can't, it might be due to underdevelopment of the corpus callosum, the part of the brain that connects the left and right hemispheres.

This could also happen if your child skipped crawling (or did an army crawl, dragging a leg behind the body) and went straight to walking 🚶‍♂️, as crawling helps develop this connection.

If that's the case, your child may have retained reflexes that you can help resolve.

🔄. To start, demonstrate for your child by crossing their right arm over to the left leg, and the left arm to the right leg. Guide them through the movement, back and forth.

They might not get it right away, but that's okay❗Be patient and practice every day.

Over time, this activity helps strengthen those neural connections in the brain 💪.

By consistently working on crossing the midline, you may see improvements in both motor skills and speech development 🌟.

It’s a simple, free exercise that you can do at home, and with patience, it can help unlock new ways of communicating.

Let me know how it goes! 😊

🚶‍♀️Elopement in autism refers to a child running away or wandering off, often due to sensory overload 🔊, communication challenges🗣️, anxiety😰, or the need to escape overwhelming situations⏱️.

It’s something many of us can relate to, especially from moments in our own childhood when we felt overwhelmed or needed to get away.
It can also be triggered by a lack of emotional regulation or a desire for stimulation & exploration. 💔

🔄 The behavior may be reinforced if escaping from discomfort becomes a learned response.

Dietary adjustments may help manage some of the underlying factors that contribute to it. Here’s how:

🧩 Eliminate gluten & casein (wheat and dairy) to improve mood and behavior. A GFCF diet, along with cutting artificial additives and sugar, can reduce sensitivities and hyperactivity.

🌿 Children with autism often have gut issues. A fiber-rich diet and probiotics soothe the gut, while Omega-3s support brain function & reduce anxiety.

🍽️ Balance blood sugar to reduce mood swings and impulsivity. Focus on organic protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs to maintain stability & reduce impulsive behaviors.

🥦 Magnesium (leafy greens, seeds) calms the nervous system, while B vitamins (greens, eggs) support emotional stability, helping manage anxiety & irritability.

🧠Amino acids like tryptophan (turkey, eggs) boost serotonin, regulating mood. 5-HTP supplements help serotonin production, while Vitamin D (from food, sunlight) supports emotional well-being.

🌙 Avoid caffeine and stimulants to reduce restlessness. Herbal teas like chamomile, tulsi, and Ashwagandha promote relaxation and reduce impulsivity.

🥗 Create a balanced diet with consistent meals, hydration, and electrolytes to prevent irritability & support emotional stability and focus.

Dietary changes alone may not stop elopement, but reducing brain & gut inflammation is key. These changes support emotional regulation & behavior management, helping reduce impulsivity. 💙

The holiday season can be challenging for children with autism—sensory overload, routine disruptions, and unfamiliar foods can all create stress and anxiety.

But with the right preparation, we can make the festivities more enjoyable for your child and your family. 🎄✨

Here’s how to make Christmas autism-friendly:

1️⃣ Mind the Diet: Got a picky eater? Plan ahead! Bring their favorite dish, work with the host, or prepare a separate meal—homemade gluten-free pizza and cookies for Christmas? Absolutely fine!

2️⃣ Support Gut Health: A gut-healing diet with bone broth, fermented foods, and veggies supports mood balance and reduces overwhelm.

3️⃣ Prepare for Routine Changes: Discuss changes early, use visual aids for schedules, and keep routines steady.

4️⃣ Gentle Detoxification: Boost detox with hydration, Epsom salt baths, binders, and liver-support supplements to ease brain fog and boost focus.

5️⃣ Manage Overstimulation: Bright lights, noise, and crowds can overwhelm. Create a quiet space for breaks.

6️⃣ Create a Quiet Space: A sensory-friendly retreat is essential for moments when your child needs to recharge.

7️⃣ Set Boundaries & Communicate: Share your child’s needs—food, socializing, or sensory. Clear communication helps everyone align.

8️⃣ Talk to Your Child: Discuss what they’re comfortable with—whether it’s how they receive gifts or changes in routine. Their comfort matters!

Focus on gut health, detox, a calm environment, and clear communication to create a joyful holiday for your autistic child.

💚 Let’s make this season one of healing, support, and love for everyone in the family! ✨

How do you know if your child has chronic infections…

…that don’t manifest as typical symptoms?

For anyone with autism, I would say she has underlying chronic infections that contribute to autism behaviors

Why?

I see the autism behaviors as a sign the body is overloaded with compounds that cause brain inflammation.

And is struggling to detoxify and eliminate well.

🦠 Mold
🦠 Bacteria
🦠 Viruses
🦠 Parasites
🦠 Lyme
🦠 Yeast

These are fed by toxins in the body, their favorite foods!

First, identify the pathogens.

Second, identify which toxins are in the body that keep these little guys fed.

Third use a methodical and targeted approach to eliminate both microbes and toxins.

Remember to
✅ Use binders
✅ Go slow if needed
✅ Open drainage systems

Ask your doctor or functional health practitioner to help you identify the root causes of your child’s symptoms and behaviors.

This starts with looking for chronic infection and toxins in the body.

Supporting an autistic child’s happiness means tailoring strategies to their unique needs. It starts with understanding and involves patience, creativity, and connection.

🔍 Ask yourself:
How does your child prefer to communicate❓ (Talking, symbols, showing you by leading, sign language, writing?)
When and where do they feel most comfortable❓
What brings them joy and peace❓

Improving the mood or making an autistic child happy involves a mix of strategies tailored to their individual needs and preferences.

💡 Ways to help:
🗂 Create Structure: Use routines, visual schedules, and timers.
🧸 Sensory Support: Provide sensory toys, hugs and squeezes, a quiet space, or weighted blankets.
🌟 Positive Reinforcement: Praise good behavior, offer rewards, and use charts.
🎨 Engage Interests: Support hobbies, play related games, or watch favorite shows.
🤸‍♂️ Physical Activity: Encourage outdoor play, kids yoga, sensory-friendly or brain-building exercises, like crossing the midline activities.
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Social Connection: Arrange small playdates, model social behavior, and praise interactions.
🗣 Communication Aids: Use visuals, PECS, or sign language for non-verbal needs.
🎶 Creative Outlets: Encourage art, music, puzzles, or crafts.
🧘‍♀️ Emotional Regulation: Teach deep breathing, mindfulness, and use calm-down kits.
🥗 Healthy Lifestyle: Ensure good nutrition, sleep routines, and exercise.
✅ Offer Choices: Let them decide on activities or simple tasks.

And above all, Gut Health!

Remember, if you’re stressed, your kids feel it too. Let’s work on calming activities together to support our kiddos! 💖

Did you know that chemicals like phthalates and BPA, commonly found in plastics, food packaging and scented products, can have a profound impact on your child’s health?
🧴 plastics
💮 scented products
⚛ artificial scents
🧃 plastic containers
The list goes on and on!

🌿 Since when did we start letting harmful chemicals like phthalates and BPA get into our daily lives? And why?

⚗️I think it’s the plastic, food and fragrance industries pushing these toxins into us - all while making money off our health!

🧠 The problem is, these chemicals mess with hormone regulation and disrupt brain development, especially in young children. For kids on the autism spectrum, these toxins can accumulate in the brain and other fatty tissues, making developmental delays even worse.

So, what can we do?

🌱 Choose natural fragrance alternatives like essential oils.

🚫 Avoid plastics as much as possible, use natural products instead. Use glass instead of plastic.

Does your child repeat words or phrases over and over?

This is called echolalia—a way for their brain to process, communicate, or even self-soothe. While it can feel like a mystery, there’s a deeper root: gut and brain inflammation.

Echolalia isn’t just a symptom—it’s a window into your child’s needs. 🌈 💖

Here’s the GOOD news: With the right tools, you can support their journey toward communication and connection.💬✨

💡 Solutions that work:
✅ Heal the Gut: Reduce inflammation with a clean, anti-inflammatory diet (think whole, unprocessed foods, avoiding gluten & dairy if sensitive).

✅ Boost Nutrient Levels: Address deficiencies in zinc, magnesium, B vitamins—they’re critical for brain health and communication.

✅ Support Detox Pathways: Safe, gentle detox (like Epsom salt baths / specific supplements) can help reduce toxic overload.

✅ Address Sensory Overload: A calm environment with sensory tools can reduce the stress that often triggers echolalia.

✅ Build Language Skills: Strategies like pausing to allow your child to process language & modeling phrases he can use meaningfully.

✅ Tackle Infections: Chronic infections (like candida or viruses) can fuel inflammation—addressing them holistically can reduce symptoms.

✅ Therapeutic Interventions: Pairing medical care with speech therapy & ABA fosters language development.

Echolalia isn’t a barrier—it’s a stepping stone! With the right support, your child’s voice can shine. 🌈

👉 Do you feel that your child may be showing signs of echolalia?

I see these as signs of toxicity, poor methylation, not enough nutrients, other biochemistry not functioning in the cells.

1️⃣ Stick to a routine: Kids, especially those with autism, thrive on consistency. Keep meal and snack times close to your usual schedule for comfort in new surroundings.

2️⃣ Use visual schedules: Prepare your child for dining with visual aids or stories. Show photos of meals, restaurants, or grocery trips to set expectations.

3️⃣ Research local restaurants: Research 2-3 local spots with foods your child loves or dietary options. Go-to choices simplify last-minute decisions.

4️⃣ Pack safe foods: Pack your child’s favorite shelf-stable snacks in a collapsible suitcase for familiar foods, no matter where you are.

5️⃣ Plan a grocery pickup: If packing food isn’t possible, order groceries for pick-up upon arrival to save time.

6️⃣ Bring familiar dining tools: Pack familiar plates, cups, or utensils to make mealtime feel like home. A visual timer can help with transitions.

7️⃣ Stay somewhere with a full kitchen: Choose a hotel or Airbnb with a kitchen and essential appliances to easily prepare your child’s favorite meals.

8️⃣ Eat one meal “at home” daily: Have at least one meal in your accommodations daily for a familiar, relaxing, and nutritious experience.

9️⃣ Involve your child in meal planning: Involve older kids in meal planning or choosing restaurants to build excitement and encourage trying new things!

🔟 Stay flexible: Focus on connection, not perfection. Respect preferences, adapt, and keep mealtime stress-free.

Vacations are about more than food! Celebrate the memories you’re making, the activities you’re sharing, and the time spent together as a family.

By planning ahead and embracing flexibility, you can create a vacation experience everyone will enjoy.

I’ve created an awesome list of strategies to get your child to eat more variety.
