Today's volunteer shopping trip was a day filled with joy, laughter, and warmth. We kicked off the adventure with games and prizes as we made our way to Hobby Lobby, for some crafty finds. Then treats awaited us at Sweet Peace Bakery - where delicious pastries warmed our hearts and fueled our fun. The Ashland Town Center Mall was our next stop, and what better way to cap off the day than with a tasty lunch at Texas Roadhouse. The food was amazing…but being in the company of sweet volunteers was even better.

We are so grateful for our SOMC Transportation Driver, Anne Kaskey for getting us safely to each stop and for this amazing department for always going the extra mile when our volunteers request transportation for outings. And to our incredible volunteers, thank you for making today so special. Your kindness, energy, and smiles are what makes every day an absolute blessing 🎄.

Soup Day - Wednesday‼️

It’s been a little chilly lately – and there’s nothing better to embrace the cold than a hot steamy bowl of homemade soup! With this in mind our Volunteers are invited to stop by the Volunteer Office (Waller Bldg. – Suite 204A) on Wednesday, November 19th between 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. for a delicious bowl of homemade Cheesy Hamburger Potato Soup!

It is with great regret that I inform you of Joyce White's unexpected passing over the weekend. Joyce was a dedicated volunteer at SOMC, serving as Secretary of the Hope Guild, Gift Gallery, Hospice and a member of the Volunteer Book Club for 17 years. Her passing will leave a significant void. Sincere condolences are sent to her family and fellow volunteers. In line with the family's wishes, no funeral services will be held.

The book chosen by the Volunteer Book Club to discuss in December is “The Christmas Basket” by Debbie Macomber, and we are scheduled to discuss the title on December 20th at 12pm at Hill View. Being our Christmas gathering members attending are asked to bring a $10.00 gift card to a local restaurant tucked inside a Christmas card to exchange. Jenny Lavender will most likely come up with a few more festive ideas too - so hope you can join in the fun! For further information or to RSVP, please contact the Volunteer Office at 740-356-8234.

Southern Ohio Medical Center has earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country using evidence-based measures of patient safety focused exclusively on errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

“This grade says a lot about our commitment to safety at SOMC,” SOMC Director of Safety Christy Timberlake said. “It’s always been a priority for us, and this is a reminder that our efforts are paying off. Our goal is to provide the safest possible environment for our patients and staff, and we will continue to do everything we can to achieve that.”

“Earning an ‘A’ Grade means Southern Ohio Medial Center made a true commitment to put patient safety first,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the leadership, Board, clinicians, staff and volunteers that all had a role to play in this achievement.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

“Life is meant for good friends and great adventures.” The Pediatric Guild enjoyed a beautiful day in Jackson, with shopping and bakery faire at Four Mile Bakery, followed by a delicious and enjoyable lunch while conducting their November business meeting at Arch & Eddie’s. Many thanks to SOMC Transportation for always making our annual Guild trips happen as well - couldn’t do it without them (and Anne Kaskey) 🖤

On November 11th, our biannual Guild President meeting took place with CEO & President Ben Gill, providing a valuable experience for our six guild presidents. Collaborative discussions and information sharing ensured the meeting's effectiveness. Additionally, Justin Clark, Administrative Director of Plant Operations, offered a “behind the scenes tour” to conclude the meeting. Pictured from left to right are: Ben Gill - SOMC CEO & President, Nancy Hawk - Pleasure Guild, Shelby Powell - Service Guild, Sandy Cable - Hope Guild, Linda Browne - Scioto Guild, Cindy Brown - Pediatric Guild, Jenny Lavender - Manager Volunteer Services/Guild Coordinator, Karen Wood - Kardia Guild, Sherri Hurley - Secretary Volunteer Services, and Angela Wells-Coburn - Administrative Director of Community Relations & Development Foundation.
