We are deeply grateful to Mayor Phillip Jones for his leadership and for recognizing the very real impact this situation is having on our community.
Most importantly, our thoughts are with the more than 4,400 patients who are now facing a loss of access to care. These are not numbers to us—they are individuals and families who rely on consistent, local services, and we recognize the disruption and uncertainty this creates in their lives.
We want our patients and the community to know that this outcome was not for lack of effort. For more than 18 months, we have continued to operate without funding, holding firm to the belief that what began as a misunderstanding would ultimately be resolved. During that time, we made every good-faith effort to engage in dialogue—working with delegates, senators, and both the previous and current Governor’s administration—to find a path forward.
Despite those efforts, and despite the support voiced by many leaders, our resources are not unlimited. We can no longer continue operations for many of our patients under these conditions.
This is not the outcome we fought for, and we share in the frustration and disappointment felt by our patients and the broader Hampton Roads community.
Hoping for a last-minute resolution. But we accept that it is now beyond our control.
I’m deeply concerned about the sudden suspension of services at Fishing Point Healthcare, leaving more than 4,400 Medicaid patients without access to critical care.
This is a serious public health issue impacting vulnerable residents across Newport News and Hampton Roads.
Fishing Point also serves Downtown Newport News and operates the area’s only community pharmacy, making this disruption even more alarming.
We must act with urgency. I’m calling on the General Assembly and state agencies to work quickly toward a resolution so these essential services can be restored.
