🏆 2026 CIT Awards — 2nd Annual 1st Responder Wellness Conference

At our 2nd Annual 1st Responder Wellness Conference, we are proud to honor the extraordinary individuals who exemplify the heart and soul of Crisis Intervention Team Training (CIT). This year, we are pleased to recognize five outstanding award recipients who have demonstrated the defining qualities of a true CIT professional — empathy, courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to those in mental health crisis.

This year's award categories include:
🥇 CIT Officer of the Year - Josh Justice
Awarded to the officer who has gone above and beyond in demonstrating exceptional skill, leadership, and dedication in crisis intervention throughout the year.

⭐ CIT Award of Excellence - Heaven James & Chase Conley
Presented to individuals who have shown outstanding performance and commitment in applying CIT principles to protect, serve, and support individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.

💙 CIT Champion Award - Julie Bias & Courtney Roach
Given to those who champion the mission of CIT both in the field and within their communities — advocating for mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and inspiring others to embrace a compassionate approach to crisis response.
Each of these honorees embodies the true spirit of CIT — meeting individuals in their most vulnerable moments with patience, understanding, and dignity. They remind us that first responders are not only protectors of public safety, but also beacons of hope for those in crisis.

Creating space between a crisis and action can save lives.
Today’s conversation on lethal means safety was a powerful reminder that simple steps—like safely storing medications and fi****ms or checking in with someone who may be struggling—can make a real difference in moments of crisis. Slowing things down creates time for support, connection, and hope.
A huge thank you to Amy Hamm for sharing her knowledge and helping raise awareness about this important topic. Your presentation made an impact!

Sometimes what we call “just stress” is actually something more.
Stress is a normal part of life—it comes and goes with challenges, deadlines, and responsibilities. But when it sticks around, starts affecting your sleep, your mood, your relationships, or your ability to function, it may be crossing into anxiety, burnout, or even depression.
Pay attention to the signs: Constant exhaustion, even after rest
• Feeling overwhelmed by small things
• Irritability or emotional numbness
• Trouble concentrating or making decisions
• Withdrawal from people or activities you once enjoyed
You don’t have to push through it alone. It’s okay to pause. It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to prioritize your mental health.
Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.

You’re Not Alone – It’s Okay to Reach Out
Taking the first step toward mental health treatment can feel overwhelming, but it’s one of the most important things you can do for yourself. Reaching out is a sign of strength—not weakness—and help is always available.
A heartfelt thank you to Debra Bloomfield for sharing such a powerful and informative video that highlights the importance of seeking support and breaking the stigma around mental health. Your message is making a difference and encouraging others to take that courageous first step.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please remember you don’t have to go through it alone. There are people who care, who listen, and who want to help you heal.
Be kind to yourself.
Speak up.
Reach out.

Seeking Mental Health Treatment:
So many people wait—sometimes for years—before reaching out for mental health support. But why?
Often, it’s not because they don’t need help… it’s because they feel they shouldn’t.
Stigma still whispers that asking for help is a weakness. Fear tells them they might be judged. Pride convinces them they can “handle it on their own.” And sometimes, they’ve been hurt before and don’t want to risk opening up again.
Others may not even realize what they’re feeling is something valid—and treatable. They normalize anxiety, minimize depression, or push through burnout until it becomes overwhelming.
The truth is: seeking support is not a last resort—it’s a powerful first step. You don’t have to wait until things get worse to deserve care.
If you’ve been putting it off, this is your sign: you are allowed to take care of your mind just like your body.

Teen Stress Tips That Actually Help
Being a teenager can feel overwhelming sometimes—school, friendships, expectations, and figuring out life. If stress is starting to pile up, here are a few simple ways to take back control:
Take a break – Step away from what’s stressing you, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
Talk it out – Reach out to a friend, parent, or trusted adult—you don’t have to handle it alone.
Get moving – Exercise helps release tension and boost your mood, even a short walk counts!
Prioritize sleep – Your brain needs rest to recharge and handle challenges.
Limit screen time – social media can amplify stress—disconnect when you need to.
Stay organized – Writing things down can make everything feel more manageable.
Be kind to yourself – You’re doing the best you can, and that’s enough.
Remember: stress is normal, but you don’t have to let it control you. You’ve got this!

Feeling overwhelmed lately? You’re not alone—and it’s okay to pause, breathe, and take things one moment at a time.
Life can get heavy, but even on the toughest days, you’re stronger than you feel right now. Give yourself grace, rest when you need to, and remember that it’s okay to not have everything figured out. One small step forward is still progressing.
A big thank you to Shala Massie for creating this powerful video and reminding us that we’re not alone in the struggle. Your message is truly appreciated and needed.
