Plain Language Rights for members
Sourced directly from Title 34-B Section 5605
1. Humane Treatment; The right to be treated with dignity and respect.
2. Practice of Religion; You have the right to worship how you wish
3. Work; The right to work
5. Vote; You have the right to vote, and for who you want to
6. Personal Property; You have a right to your own stuff, with some exceptions if you are
trying to hurt yourself with something you own
7. Nutrition; You have the right to have nutritious food in appropriate amounts
8. Medical Care; You are entitled to prompt and appropriate medical and dental care, (this is a big section of rights, I you have a specific question see the full definitions at the law posted at beginning)
9. Sterilization; You have the right not to be sterilized against your will
10. Social Activity; You have a right to enjoy social activity in your community
11. Physical Exercise; You have the right to access appropriate venues for exercise
12. Discipline; You have the right have a direct say in the rules where you live, and a right to not be punished corporally, or be secluded.
13. Behavioral Support, modification, and management; This is a big section, but basically it boils down to any support plan you have has to be accessed by a physician and includes things that can never happen, such as hurting you physical or mentally.
14. Restraints; You have a right to free from restraint unless it is short term to protect you or others around you from harm, and it has been approved in the process in number 13.
15. Records; Your records must remain confidential
16. Therapeutic Devices or interventions; Any device you use must be prescribed by a qualified professional and designed to not hurt you.
17. Safety devices and practices; Any safety device must be prescribed by a physician and allow good body alignment and circulation and allow for body position changes.
