Our next clinic, April 25, will cover these concepts........
Effective connection requires regular, smooth calm energy shaping, clear communication through body language, and consistent positive interaction to foster safety and mutual respect.
~~Achieving true connection requires engaging the mind and hind legs through a relaxed back to the hand while looking for direction with acceptance, starting with mental engagement before physical movement. The rider must cultivate connection by ensuring the horse's mind is present, using transitions, lateral work, and maintaining an active, consistent tempo in a regular rhythm, to encourage the hindquarters to step under the body, rather than pulling the head in.
Connection & Engagement:
Mental Connection First: Ensure the horse is relaxed, focused, and not anxious, as mental tension prevents physical connection.
Hind Leg Awareness: Feel the horse's hind legs by focusing on your own seat bones, which should drop gently when the corresponding hind leg moves forward.
Back to Front: True connection starts from the hind legs pushing energy forward, traveling through a lifting back, and being received in the reins, not by forcing a head position.
Exercises:
Perform frequent walk-trot-walk or trot-canter-trot transitions to encourage the hind leg to step deeper under the body.
Use leg yields or turn on the forehand to connect the inside leg to the outside rein, helping the horse engage and accept the bit.
Ride circles of varying sizes (spiraling in/out) to improve control over the hind legs.
Rider Position: Maintain a neutral pelvis with seat bones down and a flexible, engaged core to allow you to absorb, rather than block, the energy.
By focusing on the feeling of the horse’s hind leg movement and establishing a "conversation" that starts with the mind, the horse will naturally lift its back and move with more balance and ease.

🔹 Develop a "heart connection" 🧡 taught in our Zoe module, where the horse voluntarily chooses to be with you, often showing relaxation, such as lowering their head, stretching and seeking out your direction.
🔹Use clear, consistent body language to establish a dialogue based on trust, looking for direction; rather than by demands or force.
