I know I talk a lot about how we need to change our mindset around our food culture because of our idea that the traditional diet is consumed with junk, processed foods, and we still need to. A lot of that mindset comes from what we see in the media and what we are primarily surrounded by. ⠀
⠀
But, another reason why we have this unhealthy idea about food culture is because we see healthy food as expensive. When going out to eat, the processed foods are knowingly cheaper than a fresh salad. For example at a very popular fast food restaurant, a cheeseburger is $1.49, whereas a salad is $6.11‼️For someone who is on a budget or low in funds, which option do you think they would choose?? ⠀
⠀
Society always talk about how Americans are rapidly getting obese, and we do have high rates of obesity, but yet the same unhealthy food they try to say we shouldn’t be eating is so cheap and affordable so obviously it’ll keep increasing rates to the obesity pandemic.⠀
⠀
So what can we do about this? First, we need to educate others about our terrible food system and the importance of eating healthy. Then, we need to educate people how they can eat healthy without having to go for the junk and processed foods at first glance. This looks like holding workshops in the neighborhoods that experience this food culture mindset. Providing free education (Superhealthful) for others to learn from. Doing grocery store tours with families to help them navigate their way through the store and showing them how to shop healthy and save money. There is so much we can do as a community and as a individuals, we just need to start.⠀
