Birth can be so many things simultaneously: sacred, transcendent, beautiful, enchanting, gritty, earthy, deeply spiritual, meaningful, messy, intense hard work, profoundly animalistic, otherworldly, and so on.

Often birth isn’t what we think it will be or what it appears to be like from the outside. Birth is a deeply personal and unique journey of transformation that may or may not look like our ideal.

Birth is the greatest teacher.

Annnnd so is the amazing book this quote is from, “Transformed by Birth” by Britta Bushnell. I’m just 17 pages in, but would already recommend 1000%.

POSTPARTUM VISIT: Always bittersweet for me! So sweet to see the family grow and sad to reach an ending after experiencing so much together. 💕

What is the purpose of a postpartum visit with a birth doula? I like to make it a more relaxed time to check in with the parents and review the birth. I definitely don’t expect anything to be clean or put together because postpartum is a messy time, physically and emotionally.

A few topics we may cover:
✨mental, physical, and emotional health of the parents
✨the Edinburgh postnatal scale for assessing postpartum depression
✨the adjustment to parenthood
✨recovery and rest for the mother
✨the birth: process, review, answer questions, share insights, and hear how both partners felt throughout the experience
✨the baby’s feeding and sleep
✨any resources that could be helpful, such as lactation consultants, baby massage, pediatric dentist, postpartum doulas, etc.
✨anything else the parents want to discuss!

I try to listen with empathy, be a safe space to process any difficult experiences, help the parents feel heard and seen in their struggles, acknowledge and validate feelings, and encourage and praise what I have observed.

“Asking your husband to be your sole guide through labor is like asking him to lead the way on a climb of Mt Everest. He may be smart and trustworthy, you may love him, but in the Himalayas you’d both be a lot better off with a Sherpa!” – Pam England

Birth is like climbing a challenging summit. Doulas are like the sherpas of childbirth - experienced guides that help prepare, support and stay with you throughout your journey.

Most partners are very supportive, loving, and want to help all they can during labor. But let’s be real. How much experience do most partners have with childbirth? Not much, besides maybe what they’ve seen through the media (which is typically not realistic or positive).

Like climbing a summit, birth can be a long process and partners often appreciate and need other people there to help give support. Doulas also provide informational support to help you both feel more confident and prepared going into birth.

Even experienced climbers use sherpas to help them get to the summit and back safely. Having a doula to guide and support you before, during, and after birth can help the journey be more positive for both partners.

“I don’t care what kind of birth you have…a home birth, scheduled c-section, epidural hospital birth or if you birth alone in the woods next to a baby deer. I care that you had options, that you were supported in your choices, and that you were respected.” – January Harshe

I recently had the honor of supporting this couple with their first birth. The mama was so inspiring and powerful as she breathed through each surge.

One of my favorite parts of being a doula is meeting amazing people and being able to play a small part in their birth story. It is an incredible honor that I don’t take lightly. 💕

YOUR BIRTH MATTERS. Your experience giving birth matters. Each birth will become a part of you, a powerful memory you will have for the rest of your life! Your birth is worth investing in because YOU are worth investing in. Birth impacts you to your very core and is always worth the time, money, and energy you put into it.

INVEST TIME by reading books, listening to podcasts, watching videos, researching, learning, and educating yourself to be empowered.

INVEST MONEY by getting the best support you can from a doula, taking a good childbirth class, and hiring a provider you feel safe and comfortable with.

INVEST ENERGY by mentally and emotionally preparing for birth, practicing breathing, exercising, meditating, and reciting affirmations.

I promise, your birth is worth the investment!

Most people don’t think twice about planning for weeks and spending thousands on their wedding day. So why wouldn’t you invest similar time, money, and energy into planning for your birth to make sure you are supported and prepared?

Birth is incredible. Birth brings so much potential for growth and learning. Even years later, I am in awe of my own births and the lessons I’ve learned. Birth teaches in such a profound, personal, powerful way. I’ll never stop being in awe of birth.

Do you see birth as a positive, transcending experience? Something that helped you access your inner strength?

EMOTIONS: How do you want to feel when giving birth? Have you ever considered feeling joyous?

What about safe, supported, secure, love, trust, grateful, powerful, strong, open, confident, instinctual, curious, calm, relaxed, peaceful, happy, euphoric?

These are all possible!!

When thinking of how you want to feel while giving birth, consider how the people, location, thoughts, environment, objects, interventions, etc around you will influence your emotions.

✨ Be intentional about the things and people around you during birth to increase the chance you will experience your ideal emotions. ✨

I am officially a DONA trained doula!!! My heart and mind were so full after two days of training last weekend. 🤍

There was so much knowledge, inspiration, and love pouring from Melissa Chappell. She is a powerful teacher and doula trainer, and an incredible midwife! I also loved meeting so many amazing women!

After years of dreaming of being a doula, I’m so grateful to be able to attend this training, learn more, and move forward with this beautiful work. My passion for birth has never been stronger!

What does a doula do? SO many things, seen and unseen. Here are a few ways I will be there for my clients during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. 💕

This was my first birth as a doula 4 years ago, supporting my beautiful, strong, amazing sister and her husband.

I had been up since 3:30 am and was nearly 20 weeks pregnant with my second baby myself, yet I was completely exhilarated. So tired, yet so alive.

I knew I had found my passion and calling - helping others have a supported, positive, empowered birth experience.

Several years later, after moving out of state and back plus two more of my own pregnancies, I am excited to be turning my dream into a reality. I still feel the same passion and excitement for supporting others as a birth doula. Nothing else would make me gladly get out of bed at any hour of the night. 🌙

My first birth 8 years ago transformed me. During my pregnancy I learned all I could and prepared mentally, emotionally, and physically for birth. With knowledge and support, I had a beautiful, empowering birth that forever changed me. I realized my strength as a woman and the power of my body and spirit. I carried that strength from my birth with me into motherhood, and experienced ripple effects of healing and growth.

My passion for pregnancy and birth was ignited after my first baby and kept burning bright through my next three pregnancies. Every birth has further changed and opened and transformed me. I’ll always be in awe of birth and the incredible and powerful experience it can be. Talking to others I realized that not everyone has such an empowering, positive experience.

I believe birth matters! The way a woman experiences birth makes a difference to her, her baby, her partner, her family, her community, and the world! Birth changes women and women change the world. 💪

I became a doula because I want to help women begin motherhood feeling seen, heard, and supported. Because I believe in the power of birth and the power of women. Because I want to help change the world in my own small way, one empowered woman and birth at a time.
