The lilacs are popping, singing Happy Lavender Graduation to all of the LGBTQIA+ university students! Here’s some cool history for you about it:
1. It was started by Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a Jewish le***an, who was denied attending the graduation of her children because of her sexual orientation.
2. The first event was held at the University of Michigan in 1995 and was designed by Dr. Sanlo.
3. The hope is to honor all LGBTQIA+ scholar’s contributions and achievements in academia - as students who survived the college experience.
Traditional academic culture is not kind to q***r and marginalized folx from all walks of life. How cool is it that we can stand together in celebration of surviving systems of oppression! 💜🥳
