💪💃 Just a little story of rematriation inside the modern home.
Bernie Sinclaire is 38. Her best friend Anabelle Gonzalez is 39. They teach at the same all-girls school in the Bronx, and they live together in a Manhattan apartment with Bernie's two sons (Marcos, 9, and Nicolas, 4) and Anabelle's daughter (Sophia, 7).
They call it a mommune. Two single moms, three kids, one home. The kids share a room. They've started a band.
What started as a way to share the load became a permanent arrangement. They moved in together in August 2024. By December they'd upgraded to a bigger apartment with a playroom and a gym, built around the family they were becoming. Bernie has letters from college with her old roommate about wanting a "Barbie Dream House" they'd live in with no men.
Bernie studied matriarchal societies and indigenous communities in college and calls herself a "mommunist." She runs a newsletter helping other women build the same kind of household. The argument is about equity. She says traditional setups leave moms doing the invisible work and absorbing the resentment. A women-centered home redistributes the load between two equals who actually share the labor.
This is the kind of lifestyle that works for them.
