When a child is having a melt down, they’re not being bad. They’re overwhelmed and their nervous system is begging for co-regulation, not correction. So instead of fighting the storm, be the calm. Get on their level down on the floor or grass, lower your voice, and offer them the one thing they least expect warmth. Their body will relax and their breath will slow. They'll melt into you like it was all they needed. This isn’t magic. It’s nervous system science and it works.

Tantrum vs. Meltdown

A tantrum is an intentional outburst of anger or frustration, often aimed at getting a specific goal, like attention or a desired object. A meltdown, on the other hand, is an overwhelming response to sensory or emotional overload and unlike a tantrum your child is not in control, they're struggling to communicate and/or regulate their behavior.
