Ahead of the VFW’s 126th birthday, we’ll be posting little known facts about the VFW leading up to our birthday on September 29!

It’s the evening of Sept. 29, 1899. 13 Spanish-American War veterans gathered in a small tailor shop in Columbus, Ohio, to discuss how they could assist their fellow veterans and the dependents of their fallen comrades. Soon joined by American veterans from the Philippine Insurrection, their desire to care for those who shared a common bond forged by war, laid the foundation for the multifaceted, powerhouse organization that is known today as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

The VFW reaffirms its commitment to unaccounted for service members on National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

Today, September 19th, 2025, we respectfully observe POW/MIA Recognition Day. Our thoughts are with the many thousands of American servicemen still missing and unaccounted for and their families whose uncertainty remains; all of our efforts must be focused on achieving the fullest-possible accounting and ensure that they are not forgotten.

A day of recognition for POW/MIA awareness has taken various forms since the 1970s, both through federal ceremonies and state proclamations. In 1988 the day was officially recognized by an Act of Congress, the POW/MIA Flag was recognized by Congress in 1990, and numerous additional endeavors have taken place since then. We have seen great progress over the past several decades, but there is still much work to be done. May this POW/MIA Recognition Day be a time of solemn reflection, and may the days following bring us resolution for the many families and friends who still await answers.
