Let’s take a look at the story behind Black Spruce essential oil.

Black Spruce grows widely across Alaska and parts of Canada, where it thrives in cold climates and rugged landscapes. Because these trees grow so abundantly, large amounts are harvested for the paper industry. The trunks are used, but traditionally the branches and needles were left behind as waste.

That’s where things changed.

dōTERRA works with sourcing partners to make use of these leftover parts of the tree. The branches and needles, which contain the aromatic essential oil, are carefully collected and steam distilled.

Even the distillation process is designed with sustainability in mind. The remaining plant material is used by a local power plant, creating steam that helps power further distillation. This closed-loop system reduces waste and supports multiple industries at the same time.

It’s a great example of how thoughtful sourcing can turn what used to be discarded into something valuable.

You may have seen the term CPTG Certified Pure Tested Grade®. This standard was created by dōTERRA to ensure that every oil is carefully tested for purity, potency, and quality.

Essential oils aren’t regulated by a universal quality authority, which means each company is responsible for verifying the purity of their own products. dōTERRA addresses this by using a multi-step testing process that evaluates every batch of oil before it ever reaches a bottle.

These tests are performed both internally and by independent third-party laboratories, helping confirm that the oil contains the correct chemical profile and is free from contaminants or adulteration.

If an oil doesn’t meet the required standards, it simply isn’t released.

Re: Microplex VMZ, one of the products in LLV: The calcium we source from coral is no longer available from the supplier dōTERRA has used for years.

👉They have found another, but we will not be able to get the product finished and available again for purchase until August🗓️

👉It is expected that we will have enough product to get through mid May, and then it will not be available again until August.)

Here’s an interesting sourcing story behind Douglas Fir essential oil.
The Douglas Fir used for this oil grows abundantly in New Zealand, particularly on the South Island. These trees were originally introduced to the region, but over time they began spreading quickly and competing with native plant species.

Harvesting the trees for essential oil actually helps manage this environmental challenge. dōTERRA works with partners to collect Douglas Fir trees when they are still young, usually around five to seven years old, before they begin producing cones that would allow them to spread even further.

If the trees were left unmanaged, large areas would eventually need to be cleared using chemical methods, which could harm surrounding plants and soil.

By turning these trees into essential oil, the land can be managed in a more sustainable way while also creating a valuable resource.
