✨ Representation matters. Always. ✨
Barbie has introduced a new doll that represents an autistic individual who uses AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) — and this is such a powerful step toward inclusion 💙 What I love about this is Barbie partnered with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) to design this doll! That means it was designed by actually autistic individuals.
For so many children (and adults!), seeing themselves reflected in toys sends an important message:
🗣️ Communication looks different for everyone
💬 AAC is real communication
♾️ Autism is not something to “fix” — it’s something to understand and support
As an SLP, I love when everyday toys help normalize neurodiversity and open the door for meaningful conversations about acceptance, accessibility, and belonging.
What are your thoughts on this new Barbie?
Do you think representation like this makes a difference? What would you change about the design?
I’d love to hear your perspective 👇
