✨ Representation matters. Always. ✨

Barbie has introduced a new doll that represents an autistic individual who uses AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) — and this is such a powerful step toward inclusion 💙 What I love about this is Barbie partnered with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) to design this doll! That means it was designed by actually autistic individuals.

For so many children (and adults!), seeing themselves reflected in toys sends an important message:
🗣️ Communication looks different for everyone
💬 AAC is real communication
♾️ Autism is not something to “fix” — it’s something to understand and support

As an SLP, I love when everyday toys help normalize neurodiversity and open the door for meaningful conversations about acceptance, accessibility, and belonging.

What are your thoughts on this new Barbie?
Do you think representation like this makes a difference? What would you change about the design?
I’d love to hear your perspective 👇

Turn-taking is a key part of communication — and storytime is the perfect way to practice! Here are 5 engaging books that build social language skills while keeping kids entertained.

🚌 Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems
Why it works: Kids love telling the pigeon “No!” It’s a fun, low-pressure way to model conversational turns and waiting to speak.

🐻 Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson
Why it works: Repeated patterns + animals joining in = natural turn-taking moments!
Each animal gets a turn in the story — and so can your child! Encourage them to join in with “Who’s next?” or repeat favorite lines.

🎈 Press Here by Hervé Tullet
Why it works: Perfect for taking turns following directions (“Your turn to press!”). Interactive pages let children practice waiting, listening, and taking turns with you. Simple, visual, and fun!

🐘 Waiting Is Not Easy! by Mo Willems
Why it works: Great for teaching patience and emotional regulation while taking turns. Gerald’s struggle to wait helps kids relate — and practice patience during shared play or reading time.

🦆 Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
Why it works: Two friends take turns sharing opinions — just like good conversational partners! A fun way to model respectful back-and-forth conversation and perspective-taking.
Turn-taking builds conversation, listening, and cooperation — all essential communication skills!

Year 8 starts now! ✨📚
Full swing at orientation today! NYC students start this Thursday.

This year I’m continuing the start I made last year: prioritizing ME and my health and fitness as well as continuing to make time for reading for fun (and watching Gilmore Girls reruns on Hallmark).

Here are some fun facts about me:
🦋 I drink iced coffee all year round- no temp is too cold
🦋 I went to my first Bon Jovi concert when I was 12 and have been a huge fan ever since
🦋 My favorite ways to exercise are yoga and pilates but I’m trying to get in to running. Any tips are welcome!

🦋 What are you most looking forward to this year?
🦋 Contact me to schedule consultations, evaluations, or treatment sessions after school hours!

Time for another fundraiser 💜
Following ultrasounds and biopsy, I had surgery to remove a thyroid nodule and half my thyroid gland back in February 2022. I was told even after the biopsy that there were 50/50 odds of cancer. Following surgery, thank God, I was told the nodule was benign after all.

I remember thinking, the biopsy only tells me as much as a coin flip? Science hasn’t gotten any further yet? This is why we need more research.
Any little donation helps 🦋 My fundraiser for the American Cancer Society runs the entire month of September. All proceeds from my hand-drawn thyroid ribbon and thyroid butterfly stickers will be donated. Let’s raise some money and awareness 💜

What is Feature Matching in AAC?
When choosing an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device, one size does not fit all! That’s where feature matching comes in.

Instead of picking a device based on brand or popularity, we look at the individual’s unique communication needs, strengths, and challenges—then match them with a system that fits them best.

Whether the communicator is a child or an adult, we consider:
• Motor abilities
• Language level
• Vision & hearing
• Cognitive skills
• Communication partners
• Environments they’re in

AAC isn’t about finding the “best” device—it’s about finding the right one.

Let’s set up communicators for success, one feature at a time! Reach out for more information about consultations, evaluations or treatment sessions 🦋

Why “Great job!” isn’t enough!
We love praising our kids—but did you know that the type of feedback you give matters?

🦋What to Say: Instead of generic praise like “Good job,” try specific positive feedback that tells your child exactly what they did well!

🦋 For example:
✔️ “You used two words to tell me what you wanted!”
✔️ “I love how you shared your toy.”
✔️ “You waited your turn so nicely!”

🔑 Why It Helps:
🧠 Kids learn what behavior to repeat.
💪 It builds confidence and independence.
❤️ It strengthens your connection with them.

💡 Try it at home or during your child’s speech sessions! Notice one thing they’re doing well and call it out in a specific way. You’ll be amazed at how it encourages them to keep going!

Have you tried this? Tell me what you noticed! 👇✨

New little post series! 🦋✨
You’re not alone — sometimes it’s hard to know where to start when recapping such a long period of time, especially when so much happened. What’s important info and what’s extra detail? This applies to anyone, not just kids!

Instead of asking “How was your day?”, try more specific questions like:
🦋 “What was the best thing that happened today?”
🦋 “Who did you sit next to at lunch?”
🦋 “What made you laugh today?”
🦋 “Was there anything that felt tricky or hard?”
🦋 “What’s something new you learned?”

Kids often need a little extra support to dive deeper into their experiences.
Specific, open-ended questions make it easier (and more fun!) for them to share. And don’t forget — sometimes the best talks happen during relaxed moments like car rides, bath time, or while playing together!

Hi, Barbie! What a fun trend 😂 Gotta love AI

Play-based speech therapy is so powerful because children learn best through play. Play is the perfect way to involve all your senses in learning. It’s interactive and hands-on. When something is FUN and EXCITING you can guarantee there is increased attention on the activity and therefore more learning happens!

Through pretend play, building, games, and more, children are:
🦋 Practicing new words and concepts in different contexts
🦋 Learning how to take turns and follow directions
🦋 Building social skills in a natural environment (including cooperation and sharing)
🦋 Engaging in therapy that feels fun, not forced!

I believe it’s important to be able to follow your child’s lead, turning their favorite activities into meaningful learning moments.
Because when kids play, they’re not “just playing”—they’re growing!

Fun fact about me: My teacher Barbie was always my go-to Barbie as a kid! Loved the chalkboard accessory and always had her drive home in her blue convertible 🚙
