We just celebrated 50 yrs since the Vietnam War ended, amazing! I DEROSed at the end of June ‘71. You can read about my year at the 91st Evac Hospital in Chu Lai in my book, “No Wooden Nickels” available on Amazon. Check out the reviews there. You’ll learn that the life of support troops in a war zone is not as harrowing as that for those out in firefights.

When I came in country I briefly saw China Beach. The PX buildings nearby were tin roofed with plywood walls. Only GIs on the beach on an in-country R&R. Not so today! That part of Da Nang could pass as a Florida beach resort with gated communities and luxury hotels. Check out this photo of me during my trip back to Vietnam in 2019.

In the late ‘60’s most young men figured they’d wind up in Vietnam in a combat situation. My book relates the experience that the many service people who operated in base camps, like Chu Lai. The reviews on Amazon demonstrate that folks who didn’t get the “free Southeast Asian” found my book revelatory and interesting.

Arguably about 80% of those who went to Vietnam during the war worked in the rear and therefore a REMF like me. This book describes the life of a REMF in Chu Lai 1970-71. Our hospital supported the Americal Division. If you ever wondered what it was like to be there, here's a easy-to-read and sometime humorous look at my tour of duty.
