One of the foundations of health is strong digestion. To have strong digestion we need our stomach to be an acid bath, our small intestine should be alkaline and our colon should be slightly acidic...its a game of pH. The easiest way to start is Apple Cider Vinegar and sea salt in some water 2-3x a day

Whenever I feel my colitis acting up, I do a gut check on my life to stop the symptoms and prevent a flare...

Mental/emotional - am I stressing over something, frustrated, angry?

Food and supplements- what have I been eating lately? What haven't I been eating or taking lately

Physical- Am I sleeping and recovering enough? Pushing myself too hard?

This has kept me flare free for over a decade...without any meds.

You got it!

When I was in the middle of IBD flares all I wanted was to be healthy again

To have enough energy to get out of bed and go somewhere besides the bathroom…

To have my youthful energy again and be present with my family and friends

I had been dealing with Ulcerative Colitis for over 9 years and wasn’t getting better...

I was sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Something had to change and surgery was NOT an option

Biologics scared me

Steroids made me crazy
Mesalamine was destroying my liver

Was I failing my meds…Or were my meds failing me?

I had to save my colon and my life…I was too young to be this sick

At 19 I knew I couldn’t continue doing what I was doing (listening to my gastro)

I was too weak, exhausted and embarrassed to go to college parties

So I spent my nights at the library learning nutrition, food/ exercise science, medicinal plants…

And my days putting what I was learning into action: experimenting on myself

Through trial and error I figured out how to heal my gut without drugs or surgery

Its been over a decade since I have my last flare…

I can enjoy eating my old “trigger” foods without any pain

And I’m getting healthier everyday… (So can you)

Making some ribs for dinner...

Preparing quality food with love and care.

I feel this has been a big part of my healing journey

It's also enjoyable.

A healthy bowel is the foundation of a healthy body

Its where we convert the outer world into…us

Where food gets an upgrade

But if your bowel is compromised…your ability to absorb nutrients grinds to a halt
Right when you need it most…

So if you want to be healthy, to progress in the gym, to think clearly
You must clean the bowel and restore a healthy microbiome…

Micro nutrient deficiencies in Children with IBD...

Deficiencies in iron, zinc, and vitamin D are common at pediatric IBD diagnosis with limited improvement during follow-up, whereas deficiencies in magnesium and vitamin B12 are rare.

Herbs saved my gut...

Holy Basil (pictured) being a big part of my healing journey.

It's an easy to grow cousin of sweet basil...and grows like a w**d

The funny thing is growing Holy Basil seems to be as beneficial as consuming it.

Playing in the dirt cleaned up my gut...and it can do the same for you....All you need to get started is a sunny window and some potted plants

Just swap the tropical house plants for some herbs and your on your way

Its hard to have a healthy gut in 2023…

Our food supply is full of synthetic chemicals

We grow crops in something like soil

Then we remove the vitamin rich parts of crops and feed them to animals…

While keeping the empty carbs for ourselves…

At the first sign of dis-ease we take drugs that nuke our microbiome

No wonder everyone has gut issues.

In a world of cheap, processed food…You need to cook real food

Something your stomach can actually recognize

If you can grow some herbs and vegetables even better…

Movement is important for managing IBD and IBS

It's one of the key parts of my Gut Restoration Protocol and a part of my daily life…

And in celebration of the 2023 Tour De France I wanted to share my love of biking

It’s my favorite way to train…

Being able to push yourself mentally and physically (while being outside)

Or to take it easy, enjoy the scenery and cruise around…

It’s a lot like managing chronic gut issues

Sometimes you feel good and can push yourself…

Other days your in a flare and dont have much energy to do anything

Which is when you hop on the bike and take it easy

Just spinning and getting fluids to move

It's amazing how quickly you start feeling better with a little effort

What's your favorite exercise?

When I first got diagnosed with Colitis and IBS I made a ton of mistakes and wasted a lot of time

In fact, most of my teenage years were spent in and out of doctors offices…

Most of what I was doing was unnecessary and didn’t help me get better

(ending my flares, restoring a healthy gut)

I talk to parents every week who are making the same mistakes I did…

Drives me crazy because I want everyone with IBD to have a healthy gut

But if your spending a lot of time and money on the wrong things (through no fault of your own)

Its difficult to make real progress and get lasting results.

So here are some mistakes I made early on that held me back:

1. I wasn’t eating food that nourished my gut

I was eating a lot of carbs and not enough protein/vitamins/minerals/essential fats

2. I didn’t know about the world of herbal medicine

Herbs can be a powerful tool in calming inflammation and fixing dysbiosis.

3. I knew nothing of the power of emotions and how they can affect your gut…

Your state of mind while eating and throughout the day impact your ability to digest and repair.

4. Movement can help or hurt your gut
Don’t focus on cardio, instead do more restorative work like Yoga or Tai Chi.

Chiropractic care can be a game changer for many-get that nervous system support

Getting adjusted can improve bowel function and reduce inflammation. This was helpful in my healing journey.

Making lasting change takes a holistic approach…

Focusing on the Emotional, Physical and Chemical nature of my body is what allowed me to heal.

Hope this helps!
