A World of Dreams
Perfectionism is a worthy pursuit if the stakes are high like doing neurosurgery or flying a jet. But, continually trying to be perfect, or worse, apologizing for not being perfect will drive you bonkers and make you miserable. Sometimes, being "good enough" is just plain good enough.
"I don't have to be perfect just as long as I'm better tomorrow than I was yesterday." This old saw is just plain crazy-talk. First, you'll never know what a perfect you is. Then there is that pesky little definitional thing about "being better." What is that? And who, exactly, said you have some obligation to always be improving on your being you?
If you want to change things about yourself in your life, go for it. If you don't like the way you talk or how you feel and want something different. Take it on. But, along the way, remember that NOW COUNTS, too! Be you. Enjoy your being you. Some will love you for it, and others maybe not so much. C'est la vie! And it always will be.
Think in terms of characteristics as in: I want to be a nice person, an honest man, an assertive woman. Think of what those people look like and what they do, then do them.
One last potato for the stew; how do you know that you are not now your perfect you? Your best self? Improvement is fine...sometimes even great. But, life is far shorter than it seems at times and today is the day you are you today. And sometimes, that's just good enough, and that's just good enough, too. ~Phil D'Agostino, your guide to Naked Thinking.
