I am a strengths-based counselor who views wellness from the perspective of the whole person. Kirsten Reberg-Horton came to counseling with a background in Therapeutic Horticulture, landscape design and gardening. With an undergraduate degree in Studio Art and Religious Studies from UNC Chapel Hill and a master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from NCCU, Kirsten brings a diverse range of educational and life experience to her work. Counseling is a second career for Kirsten, who was drawn to this form of service by a desire to help others live with more ease and authenticity. As a therapist, Kirsten believes that no matter one's age, history, disabilities or struggles, growth and healing are possible. Change and healing occur when a person understands the source or root of their problems, establishes a vision for what a more satisfying life will look like, and works towards the realization of that vision. Often, therapy can be helpful in empathizing with and reflecting an individual’s valid feelings and experiences and helping them to transform their life story. Kirsten counsels children ages 12 and older, individuals, couples and groups. She has experience in working with parents of exceptional children, those who have experienced trauma, abuse and grief, and those struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, life transitions and illness. Kirsten acknowledges the impact of political, racial and environmental realities on health and wellbeing. Kirsten affirms all identities and works constantly to learn and develop as an antiracist and LGBTQ+ ally. Kirsten employs person-centered, Internal Family Systems, Narrative and Feminist therapy, CBT, creative therapies and Therapeutic Horticulture in her work with clients. She believes strongly that each client should be served in the way that best matches their needs and goals. When a client provides feedback, Kirsten views it as a valuable part of the therapeutic relationship and ensures it is incorporated into the treatment plan. In her collaborative work with clients, Kirsten can be expected to be curious about the client's perspective, respectful of their beliefs and empathetic to their struggles. She believes that there is no greater honor than to be invited into another person’s world.
