Kirsten Reberg-Horton, Mental Health Counselor

Kirsten Reberg-Horton, Mental Health Counselor I am a therapist at TPC Integrative Psychotherapy and Pastoral Counseling. Kirsten is honored to walk alongside her clients as they make this important journey.

I am a strengths-based counselor who views wellness from the perspective of the whole person. Kirsten Reberg-Horton came to counseling with a background in Therapeutic Horticulture, landscape design and gardening. With an undergraduate degree in Studio Art and Religious Studies from UNC Chapel Hill and a master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from NCCU, Kirsten brings a diverse range of educational and life experience to her work. Counseling is a second career for Kirsten, who was drawn to this form of service by a desire to help others live with more ease and authenticity. As a therapist, Kirsten believes that no matter one's age, history, disabilities or struggles, growth and healing are possible. Change and healing occur when a person understands the source or root of their problems, establishes a vision for what a more satisfying life will look like, and works towards the realization of that vision. Often, therapy can be helpful in empathizing with and reflecting an individual’s valid feelings and experiences and helping them to transform their life story. Kirsten counsels children ages 12 and older, individuals, couples and groups. She has experience in working with parents of exceptional children, those who have experienced trauma, abuse and grief, and those struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, life transitions and illness. Kirsten acknowledges the impact of political, racial and environmental realities on health and wellbeing. Kirsten affirms all identities and works constantly to learn and develop as an antiracist and LGBTQ+ ally. Kirsten employs person-centered, Internal Family Systems, Narrative and Feminist therapy, CBT, creative therapies and Therapeutic Horticulture in her work with clients. She believes strongly that each client should be served in the way that best matches their needs and goals. When a client provides feedback, Kirsten views it as a valuable part of the therapeutic relationship and ensures it is incorporated into the treatment plan. In her collaborative work with clients, Kirsten can be expected to be curious about the client's perspective, respectful of their beliefs and empathetic to their struggles. She believes that there is no greater honor than to be invited into another person’s world.

I work at TPC Integrative Psychotherapy and Pastoral Counseling
What does that mean?

We have therapists (like myself) who are not Pastoral counselors, but who are open to integrating spirituality in our work. We work with people of all religions, and non religions.
We have therapists with MDivs, who can counsel from a Christian perspective.
People are often confused by our name. I hope this makes it clearer!
When consulting with a new counselor, always ask questions. Make sure that their approach will match your needs, and give them feedback if it isn't working for you!

Wishing you wellness, peace and hope.

We all have “parts” of ourselves. We might say “I know I could do this, but another part of me wants to do that...” or “One part of me feels really guilty, but the other part of me knows I’m justified in my feelings.”
Where do these parts come from? How do we know what is our authentic voice? IFS Therapy explores these questions and helps people stay centered in their Self, rather than being pushed around by critical, shaming, unrealistic or procrastinating parts.
Kirsten has noticed that clients who engage in IFS experience greater self compassion and also an increased ability to advocate for themselves. IFS can be helpful for trauma, couples work and anyone hoping to gain greater insight into themselves.

Even the strongest couples sometimes talk past each other. We can feel unseen by our partner when we address the details of a disagreement rather than the emotions that are being triggered. Emotionally Focused Couple's Therapy supports couples in speaking to the feeling places in their partner, supporting greater intimacy and richness of connection. Kirsten specializes in this and other approaches to couple's counseling, and has noted deepening intimacy for the couples who share their partnership journey with her.

Selfishness or Self Care?
Chances are, you were taught that doing something just to make yourself happy was selfish. Maybe you feel you have to earn the right to rest, but every time you sit down there is still something more to do?
Self Care does not have to be time consuming or expensive, but ALL people deserve it. We all deserve moments of rest, enjoyment, play. In fact, we work better, and love better when we allow ourselves these things.

When you are kind to yourself, it is so much easier to extend kindness to others.

I am currently taking new clients: individuals, couples and children 12 and older. TPC is in network with Aetna and BCBS. We have a sliding scale and assistance funds for those who are underinsured or uninsured. We will courtesy bill out of network insurance. Offering in person (312 W. Millbrook St. Suite 109) and virtual sessions to anyone in the state of North Carolina. 919.214.9827 (talk and text) kirstenrh@tpccounseling.org https://tpccounseling.org/

I believe in individualizing the counseling experience to each client. Sometimes I use creative modalities, IFS, CBT, narrative and Emotionally Focused Couples Counseling among other theories. I don't believe in a one sized fits all counseling experience and really try to meet each client (or couple) where they are. Wishing everyone wellness and hope in these difficult times.

Walking along Millbrook Rd. this morning before my first client, I found these reminders of fall. You don't need a yard or garden to mindfully connect with nature. It is all around us.
