A Story of Uncovering Hidden Patterns
I once worked with an 81-year-old woman who discovered just how deeply her past influenced her present. She had always been active and independent but struggled with assertiveness. During a session with the Cube, she froze after only a few touches. Looking frustrated, she said, "I thought this was supposed to be fun. This isn’t fun at all."
I paused the session and asked if I could share my observation. She agreed, and I pointed out how hesitant and careful her movements had been — almost like she was afraid of making a mistake. When I gently asked if her heart ever stopped when her father came home and slammed the car door, she burst into tears. "Yes," she said. "I was seven."
In just 20 minutes of guided play in the Cube, she had unlocked a powerful memory. Two weeks later, she told me she’d experienced an "aha moment." While getting her hair done, her massage chair broke. Normally, she would have quietly endured it, uncomfortable and unspoken. But this time, she stood up and asked for a different chair — something she hadn’t felt permitted to do for decades. In those 20 minutes, she reclaimed her voice and her right to have needs.
In the 6-week program, we create these moments of realization intentionally. After one Cube session, participants reflect on what patterns emerged — did they hesitate, overthink, or avoid certain movements? These subtle patterns often mirror how we show up in relationships. The Cube provides a way to see them clearly and rehearse new responses in a low-stakes environment.
