🚨 Shaw U Nation! We need to talk 🚨

National Alumni Association leadership claims they knew NOTHING about this upcoming Alumni Town Hall happening on June 4th.

EDITED TO ADD FOR CLARIFICATION: When this Town Hall was first announced, multiple people stated that alumni leadership was unaware of it. Since then, leadership has apparently been informed and has helped circulate the information. Our intent was to discuss the communication confusion, not to intentionally mislead anyone.

And here’s the part raising even more questions. The meeting isn’t until 8 days from now, but registration has already been CLOSED.

Today, Georgia has a chance to elevate a daughter of Shaw.

Shaw University has always produced more than graduates. It has produced leaders. Fighters. History-makers. Voices that walk into rooms carrying generations with them.

Today, one of those voices is Nakia Smith Sellers.

As Georgia heads to the polls today, remember this: greatness comes from Shaw University. This is why we fight so hard to protect its legacy. Because when Shaw rises, its graduates rise into courtrooms, classrooms, communities, and history itself. Nakia is a Shaw graduate and proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., birthed through the Beta Rho Chapter. 🩷💚🩷💚

If you attended Shaw U in the 90s, you may have heard that Chad Hall has passed away.

For those who knew him, you know what a kind spirit he was. And for those who didn’t, this video is a reminder of something we often say about Shaw University...its impact reaches far beyond one student. It changes entire family legacies.

Chad’s journey through Shaw, inspired an entire family to believe college was possible. That impact now lives on through his son, Matthias, who is preparing to graduate from junior high and begin high school.

We would love for everyone who comes across this post, regardless of whether or not you attended Shaw, to surround Matthias with congratulatory messages, encouragement, and love as he enters this next chapter of life.

49 years ago, two young people met on the campus of Shaw University and together, built a lifetime. Today, we celebrate Helen Best, President of the Raleigh-Wake Alumni Chapter, and a love story rooted in the very soil of Shaw.

This is another reason why so many of us refuse to stay silent.

Shaw is not just land.
Not just buildings.
Not just balance sheets and board meetings.

Shaw is marriages.
Friendships.
Memories.
Legacy.
Black history walking around in living color.

Generations found purpose, community, and love on this campus.

That is why Shaw is worth protecting.
That is why Shaw is worth demanding better for.
That is why Shaw is worth fighting for.

Happy 49th Anniversary to the Bests.

TWELVE Shaw graduates from ONE family??!?!? SHEESH! 🐻🎓 🔥🔥🔥

Today we celebrate Virginia Ollison! She is the 12th (yes, you read that right) TWELFTH member of her family to graduate from dear ole' Shaw U. She'll be walking across that stage today, carrying forward a legacy rooted in education, perseverance, excellence, and Black history.

Twelve graduates from one family is more than a statistic. That’s generational commitment to an institution that has shaped so many lives and futures.

And while today belongs to Virginia, we’d be remiss not to acknowledge her father, fellow Shaw graduate Jared Ollison, whose love for this community and District C is visible in both word and action. He's running to represent the district in which Shaw sits in for the City Council seat. No matter the political season, it matters when people continue showing up for the neighborhoods, history, and institutions they care deeply about.

Congratulations, Virginia. Your family legacy is powerful and today, you just added another beautiful chapter to it. 🎓✨

This is a partial list of Shaw's board of trustees. Fresh leadership matters. Strong boards evolve. New voices bring new ideas, stronger accountability, modern expertise, and independent oversight. When the same people remain in power for decades, transparency weakens and institutions can stagnate. 3 to 6 year terms are very common. Many boards allow 2 consecutive terms, meaning someone might serve around 6 to 12 years total before rotating off. Some schools require a mandatory break before reappointment. But some of these board members been in power before a lot of you were born.

Shaw deserves governance built for the future, not permanence. We should let anyone shame alumni for its issues. Sometimes the hardest truth is this. Our institution cannot heal under the same hands that helped weaken it.
