On Sept. 17, NAMI Wake County presented Ending the Silence for Students at Green Level High School during the school’s mental health awareness week organized by the football team.

Over 80 students gathered to learn about mental health, reducing the stigma and how to seek help. Ending the Silence is a nationally recognized program that combines real stories with practical guidance to help young people support themselves and their peers.

We’re grateful to James Osborn of Alliance Health, NAMI Wake Executive Director Mark Simon and student leaders Jackson Evans and Alex Curtis for making this event possible.

This week, we’re highlighting our youth mental health efforts from last week at Green Level High School!

As part of the Mighty Giveback Day of Service on September 16 organized by Band Together and United Way of the Greater Triangle, NAMI Wake County teamed up with local nonprofits to assemble 500 wellness kits for students. Each kit included journals, sensory tools, resource cards and a handwritten note of encouragement, all designed to support students’ mental well-being.

A huge thank you to AmeriHealth Caritas North Carolina for sponsoring the kits and to every volunteer who pitched in. Because of you, students are leaving school with tools and reminders that their mental health matters.

We all deserve to thrive at work. 💼

This week, NAMI Wake County delivered our workplace mental health presentation, “Thriving at Work: Stories and Strategies for Supporting Your Mental Health” to the Raleigh office of FLUOR. Led by presenters Mark Simon and Carolyn Naseer, we explored how to support our own mental health, recognize when others are struggling and reduce stigma in the workplace.

Big thanks to FLUOR for leading with care and joining the movement.

Want to bring this kind of session to your workplace? Reach out—we’d love to connect! ✨

Last week, NAMI Wake County partnered with the Panhellenic Association at NC State for “The College Journey: If I Could Give Myself One Piece of Advice, It Would Be: ____,” a Radical Candor session on self-care, connection, and compassion.

The program highlighted the challenges of college life and encouraged open conversations around mental health. Our team also shared free resources to support students on their mental health journeys.

We’re so grateful to the Panhellenic Association for hosting, and to Executive Director Mark Simon, volunteer Carolyn Naseer and her daughter, Zaria Naseer, for bravely sharing their stories and insights.

September is Su***de Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of open conversations about mental health and su***de prevention. Silence can cost lives, but talking can save them.

If you or someone you love is having thoughts of su***de, call or text 988 to reach the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline. Text NAMI to 62640 or call the NAMI Helpline at 800-950-62640 to speak with someone who cares.

Opening up about your mental health journey creates space for healing and connection. Start a conversation. Be the difference.

We’re proud to share that NAMI Wake County consultant and volunteer Carolyn Naseer was recently featured on WRAL TV in a conversation about youth mental health.

Alongside other parents and providers from Avance Care, Carolyn discussed starting open conversations with youth, navigating stress and recognizing early warning signs. These important discussions help families feel more supported and prepared to prioritize mental health.

We were honored to host Jamica Whitaker and Tricia Mulili from the Beta Lambda Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in our office last week as we begin a new partnership.

Their dedication to mental health and well-being in the Black community is powerful, and we’re excited to see how we can work together to make a difference through programs like Sharing Hope and other initiatives.

Who We Are

NAMI Wake embraces the philosophy of recovery. According to the Surgeon General’s 2000 report, “Instead of focusing primarily on symptom relief, as the medical model dictates, recovery casts a much wider spotlight on restoration of self-esteem and identity and on attaining meaningful roles in society.”

NAMI Wake is a membership organization and an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and NAMI NC. Member dues are distributed among the three (3) levels of the organization: NAMI Wake, NAMI NC and NAMI. Each organization is a separate 501(c)(3) and engages in separate fundraising and program activities. NAMI Wake offers state-level and national NAMI programs, and develops our own services as needed.

NAMI Wake is the only organization that advocates for public policies that further the services and quality of life specifically for Wake County residents with mental illness and their families. NAMI Wake adopts those state-level and national policies, and establishes and conducts separate advocacy initiatives as needed.

NAMI Wake provides support, education, & advocacy to those affected by mental health challenges to create a community where mental health is valued. Join us in the fight to defeat stigma, provide education, and make mental health accessible for ALL in our community.
