Daniel P. Dahlstrom, 57, of Des Moines, IA, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025. Everyone who knew him agrees that Dan was an adventurer, a true free spirit, and all things rock ’n’ roll. He was a kind and beautiful person, and a friend to many.

Dan was born on April 7, 1968, in Geneva, IL, to Lavon and Martha Dahlstrom, the youngest of four children. The family moved to Waverly, IA, the following year, where they remained for the next decade. During those formative years, Dan attended St. Paul’s Lutheran school, developed friendships that persist to this day, learned to ski, and, while on family vacations, developed a deep love for Colorado. Stories of his childhood are woven with adventures at the YMCA of the Rockies and Estes Park, as siblings and friends recall days spent exploring and building the foundation for a lifelong love of the mountains.

The family moved to Urbandale, Iowa, in December 1978, where Dan attended Mt Olive Lutheran Elementary School and Urbandale Junior High School. He graduated from Urbandale Senior High in May 1986. Upon graduation, Dan moved to Fort Collins, CO, to attend Colorado State University, where he met and married Kim Mercer. After graduation, he stayed there to attend graduate school and raise his family.

Among his passions were music, literature, and a love for the outdoors. Whether camping in the mountains, supporting local musicians, or traveling across the country for a Grateful Dead show, he believed in the power of nature and creativity to heal and inspire. With an entrepreneurial spirit, Dan took his love of music and built a concert promotion company to foster independent music in the Fort Collins area.

At the heart of Dan’s joy were his three children, whom he missed dearly whenever he was away from them. Countless friendships, some spanning decades, are a testament to a life lived with loyalty and affection.

Dan is survived by his children: Gavin, Ian, and Anna of Colorado; father, Lavon Dahlstrom of Clive; siblings: David Dahlstrom and Sara Dahlstrom of West Des Moines; Donald (Suzanne) Dahlstrom of Clive; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Dahlstrom.

08/11/2025

Faye Jean Lyman Brandstetter of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025. She was a loving wife and mother, devoted to her family and to her extended family of first graders, and a joyous soul who laughed easily, loved deeply, and cared passionately.

Faye was born on September 6, 1940, in Cushing, Iowa, the daughter of Jack E. Lyman and Hilda Paulson Lyman. She graduated from Moville Iowa Community Schools and Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. From an early age, she displayed a love for learning and teaching along with a deep curiosity about the world—qualities that would define her life’s work and passions.

Faye dedicated four decades to teaching children in lower elementary grades, mostly first grade, where she nurtured not only the academic growth of her students but also their emotional and personal developmental needs and imagination. She was a gifted and creative educator who believed in the transformative power of reading. Her classroom was a haven for young minds, filled with carefully curated books from her private collection of more than 300 titles for early readers by esteemed authors and illustrators. Through these stories, she opened generations of young minds to wonder and discovery. Her gentle nature calmed those to whom learning was, at times, a struggle.

Beyond the classroom, Faye was an active member of several organizations that reflected her love of history, literature, and community. She belonged to Questers, P.E.O. Chapter HB, Presbyterian Women, the Omaha Lecture Series and was a founding member of a cherished no name book club where there was always a starting time with little use for an ending time. These groups were not only outlets for her intellectual interests but also sources of enduring friendship and joy.

Faye’s zest for life found great pleasure in reading, traveling across the United States and abroad, bird watching in quiet moments of reflection, spending time with dear friends at countless gathering, and being at the theatre both in the audience and on the stage. Her entry into a conversation was often filled with laughter sparked by a quick wit that initiated a cogent quip when conversation needed a lift or just an opening to her point of view.

Making sure the cookie jar was filled whenever the grandsons and neighbor kids came was a joyous experience that she looked forward to just as much as they.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Larry Brandstetter; their son Daniel Brandstetter and daughter-in-law Jennifer of Tiffin, Iowa; grandsons Garrett (LeClaire, Iowa) and Jackson (Staten Island, New York); nieces Arianna Brandstetter, Amy Hanson, Julie Goecke, and Bobbie Bruns; brother-in-law John Brandstetter; and sister-in-law Mary Fugle. She was preceded in death by her parents Jack E. Lyman and Hilda Paulson Lyman, and her sister Carol Ann Hanson.

Faye was a woman of deep compassion and gentle strength who offered comfort to those who needed it most. Somehow, she just knew who needed a kind word.

Visitation with the family will be held on Friday evening August 22, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 at LeRette Funeral Chapel, 1995 G Ave., Red Oak, Iowa.

A Funeral service will be held on August 23, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Red Oak Presbyterian Church, 511 E. Coolbaugh St., Red Oak, Iowa.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to the Red Oak Public Library or Christ's Cupboard.

08/10/2025

Mildred Louise (Mason) Gammell, beloved by so many, passed away of natural causes at age 98 in Scottsdale, Arizona on July 27th, 2025. Mildred lived life in RED, literally and figuratively, right up until the end of her exceptional life. She was a strong, independent woman who believed in making the best out of any circumstance—something she learned to do at the young age of 10, when she lost both of her parents in Pennsylvania. She made her way to Iowa where she married and created her own family soon after graduating from high school in Stennett. Mildred was devoted to the hard work of farm life in Elliott with her husband Paul William Gammell. They celebrated 67 years of marriage before Paul passed in 2013. In her 40s, Mildred began working at Houghton State Bank, rising to manager at the Red Oak branch. She retired from the bank and farming at age 65, when she and Paul moved to sunny Mesa, Arizona.

Mildred raised two beautiful daughters, Paula Louise and Linda Kay. She made sure her girls were active members of their rural community, that they had a strong work ethic, that they did well in school, that they were exposed to the nicer things in life even on a tight budget, and of course, that they enjoyed having pretty clothes for social events. Mildred was very proud of Paula and Linda and all that they accomplished in their own lives. She also greatly respected her sons-in-law, Donald Fink and Jerry D Petersen. Family time and visits were a priority for Mildred. She truly showed that she cared by making sure she was always in communication with her kids and her grandkids. She would say, “Tell me what’s new with you?”

Mildred’s friends were a vital part of her life. She was active in her communities in Elliott and Red Oak, Iowa and in Mesa, Arizona. She made new friends easily but valued her life-long friends the most. Mildred and Paul enjoyed square dancing events, musical shows, and playing cards. They spent many years vacationing at their home on Lake of the Ozarks, sharing time on their boat with family and friends. Mildred was an avid slalom water skier well into her 60s. Many kids learned how to water ski because of Mildred, including all 5 of her grandkids behind the boat at once. Mildred loved staying on the move. In their later years, she and Paul traveled the country in their RV, visiting 48 states, and many casinos. She loved her trip with her girlfriends to Europe. Most know that she loved shopping any place, any time, but only for a bargain. Mildred embraced retirement by learning the Spanish language and taking a creative writing class. She enjoyed living close enough to see Linda and Jerry every week in Arizona.

Mildred was beloved by her husband Paul W. Gammell who passed before her. She was loved by her two daughters, Linda Petersen (Gammell) and Paula Fink (Gammell), who both, very sadly, passed away before their mother. She is loved dearly and survived by her son-in-law, Jerry D. Petersen of Phoenix, Arizona, her grandchildren, April L. Petersen of Jersey City, New Jersey and James M. Petersen (Kelly) of Phoenix, Arizona, and her great-grandchildren, Leila K. Wachter and Camden J. Petersen of Phoenix, Arizona. She is also survived by 3 other granddaughters and a great grandson.

Visitation with the family will be held at LeRette Funeral Chapel located at 1995 G Ave., Red Oak, Iowa, on Monday, August 18th, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a graveside service to follow in Evergreen Cemetery located at 1800 N. 8th St., Red Oak, Iowa. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests you do something Mildred loved – spend time with family playing cards, head out on a boat, or go shopping and enjoy a piece of pie! She did not dwell in sadness so she would want everyone to share a positive experience together!
