Let’s talk about it! ⤵️
Resentment is one of the hardest emotions for dementia caregivers to admit, especially for adult children who feel responsible for “doing it all.”
You might catch yourself thinking:
→ “I love my parent, but I’m tired of doing everything.”
→ “I feel guilty for even thinking that.”
→ “Why do I feel so angry all the time?”
Here’s what I tell my therapy clients: resentment is not a sign that you’re ungrateful or unloving.
It’s a protective emotion: your mind’s way of saying, “I’ve given too much for too long.”
When you notice resentment:
→ Pause and name it without judgment.
→ Ask what boundary, break, or support you might need.
→ Remember that burnout doesn’t mean failure. It means you’ve been human for too long without enough help.
You can feel love and frustration, grief and gratitude, care and resentment… all at the same time.
