🌍 Soil's Hidden Feedback Loop: New research indicates that warming temperatures accelerate carbon release from tropical soils more than previously thought, potentially intensifying climate change.
A recent study from MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen reveals that rising temperatures significantly accelerate the decomposition of soil organic carbon in subtropical and tropical regions. By analyzing sediment cores from the Nile Delta, researchers observed that temperature increases, rather than changes in precipitation, were the primary drivers of enhanced microbial activity leading to CO₂ release. This suggests that current climate models may underestimate the sensitivity of soil carbon to warming, highlighting a potential feedback loop that could exacerbate global climate change.
