Been trying to increase the nutrient density of my diet as I recover from illness.

Making nutritious smoothies can be an easy way to get lots of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

I love that there are also lots of options to be creative and mix things up depending on what’s in season or what you have available. Frozen fruits and veggies also work great and are easy to keep on hand.

Green smoothie recipe:
🌰 1 1/2 C nut milk
🥬 2C greens (spinach, kale, chard…)
🍓1/2-1 C fruit (pineapple, berries…)
🥑1/4 avocado or 1 tbsp nut butter (for healthy omega-3 fats)
🌱1 scoop protein powder or collagen
✨+ additional boosts like mushroom powder (I like mushroom blend), greens (I like Vitamineral Greens), bee pollen…

My nutritional philosophy revolves around a whole, natural foods based diet being the keystone to health and well-being.

However these days, it is harder to find quality foods which are high in nutrients. I thus generally recommend targeted supplementation to support the body.

My top three favorite supplements to help decrease inflammation are omega-3 fatty acids, curcumin and boswellia.

These supplements can be particularly helpful when experiencing pain or injury.

Studies have shown that omega-3 supplementation can be as effective as NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen) in reducing pain, without the side-effects of the pharmaceuticals.

One of my favorite anti-inflammatory foods is salmon. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids which inhibit the COX-2 inflammatory pathway. Look for wild-caught salmon for higher nutrient density and aim for 2-3 servings of fatty fish per week to help decrease inflammation.

Acute inflammation which is the body’s natural response to injury or trauma has signs that are often easy to recognize such as redness, swelling, heat, pain or loss of function. These are indications of the body’s adaptive attempts to heal a certain area.

When inflammation begins to overwhelm the body’s natural responses (often due to prolonged or intense stressors), inflammation can become chronic and start leading to a wide variety of issues including autoimmune, metabolic and neurological conditions.

Unfortunately chronic stress is less apparent and can go undetected for long periods of time… until it begins to manifest as problematic symptoms.

One of the ways we can measure and monitor chronic inflammation is through measuring markers such as CRP, ESR, homocysteine and HA1C in blood.

These markers are good to check on from time to time to make sure inflammation is in check and to help inform nutritional and lifestyle changes.

Have you ever had these checked?

Had a great time speaking about nutritional strategies to reduce inflammation at the Kerwin Associates wellness week.

Chronic inflammation arises from the body becoming overwhelmed by stressors, and can lead to a variety of illnesses.

Symptoms of chronic inflammation include:
• fatigue
• pain
• skin irritations (acne, rashes…)
• depression or anxiety
• brain fog
• insomnia
• inability to lose weight

Stay tuned for tips on measuring and reducing inflammation and it’s effects on the body!

Always a good reminder, especially these past few weeks of navigating illness.

At times when we have little control over a situation, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and to be hard on ourselves for not being where we would like to be.

I’ve trying to focus on giving myself the grace to heal - breathing, meditating and accepting help from those around me who care so much.

Working on accepting that it’s okay not to be okay. It’s okay not to be where we hoped to be. It’s okay to ask for help. So thankful for everyone who has been here for me these past few weeks navigating through the health challenges and uncertainty.

Hope you too are able to find some light and be gentle with yourself, with whatever challenges you are facing. ✨
