Ever wonder where the name "Harvest Moon" actually comes from? 🌕✨ It’s my Grandma’s heavenly birthday today and it feels like the perfect time to share the story behind the name 🌕☘️

My Grandma Jan and Papa Gene met at a lounge called Harvest Moon in their twenties. Growing up, their stories about this place were the kind of magic you hear about in old movies. I loved hearing their stories so much - the way a small spot in the 50s started a whole legacy. I always told myself that if I ever opened a business, I’d name it Harvest Moon. Five years ago, I finally had the honor.

I wish Papa got to see what I created with the name & I’m so glad Grandma did 🥹 She has been my biggest supporter of all time, if I said I was going to “insert wild idea here” she’d lift me up like a one-woman cheer squad. With her, I could be anything.

Every day, but especially today, I’m celebrating her 🎉

Happy Birthday in heaven, Grandma Jan. I cherished you in every moment of today. You’re in every birth I attend, every heart I hold, and every moon I see 🌕✨

Harvest Moon isn’t just a name; it’s a tribute to love, dedication, and support. Miss you forever, Grandma & Papa. I love you a bushel & a peck & a hug around the neck 💕🌕

Day 2: The Accordion 🪗 (How Your Uterus Actually Pushes)
Being a doula and birth educator means seeing birth metaphors everywhere—even at a homeschool co-op craft table 🎨

Watching the kids (& myself let’s be honest) make these paper accordions, I couldn’t stop thinking about the uterus.

Think of the top of your uterus (the fundus) as these sturdy pleats. During labor, these muscles aren’t just “squeezing” and letting go; they are retracting. Every time they contract, the fibers shorten and thicken, “ratcheting” upward and staying there. Just like this accordion being compressed, the muscle mass is migrating—building a thick, powerful “engine” at the top. 🛠️

✨ Why this matters for the pushing phase:
We’ve all heard the advice to “push like you’re having a bowel movement,” but if we only focus on the “exit,” we might miss the power of the “engine.”

Physiology is universal, but the experience is individual. Whether your body triggers a Fetal Ejection Reflex (FER) or you are more consciously directing that energy, the goal is the same: stop fighting the “exit” and start working *with* the “engine.”

Instead of straining against your body, we want to harness the power of that “bunched-up” accordion at the top. When we use diaphragmatic breathing, our breath acts like a piston. It creates internal pressure that works with that thickened fundus to move the baby down. It’s not about “holding your breath and pushing from your face”—it’s about directing your energy to meet that incredible uterine pull. 💨

Welcome to Day 2 of 15 Days of Daily Birth Metaphors. Finding the power in the mundane. Because seriously—when you’re constipated, no one ever says, “Just push like you’re having a baby!” It doesn’t translate, so why do we do it the other way around? 💩

Reminding you that you can do hard things 👏

If you know, you know🕵️‍♀️ postpartum is a glamorous journey friends

03/15/2026

Being a doula & birth educator means seeing birth metaphors everywhere. POV: You’re in a car wash but mentally you’re 8-10cm dilated 😅

The overwhelm + possible sensory overload, the loss of control, and the feeling of being pummeled from all sides while you sit there in neutral unable to get away... yeah, that’s Transition 😅

It’s that “big phase” where the hormones are surging, the shakes hit, you’re suddenly too hot then too cold, and that voice in your head starts whispering, “I can’t possibly do this.” 😳

But then—the water clears. You realize the waves aren’t just happening to you; your body is actually doing the work & CRUSHING IT. Maybe you have a big emotional release. You find that second wind, the “Rinse” cycle kicks in, and you’re ready to bring a human into the world. 🌊✨

Welcome to Day 1 of 15 Days of Daily Birth Metaphors. Finding the power in the mundane. Because if we don’t laugh, we may cry???

Reminding you that you can do hard things 👏

I am currently 0% “over here making a pie,” but this message is still 100% true. 🥧

Happy Pi Day! I’m re-sharing this reel from a few months ago because while a pie has a recipe, your birth and postpartum journey doesn’t—and that’s actually the point.

In the voiceover here, I’m talking about how birth prep isn’t just about memorizing scenarios or logistics. It’s about learning how to find your “routes of safety” when things feel uneasy. It’s about realizing that you are the inner guidance you’ve been looking for.

I love the visual of making this pie, but let’s be honest: today I’m much more likely to be found reaching for a store-bought slice than kneading dough. 🫠

Whether you’re in a season of transition or just beginning to plant the seeds for your birth, remember: it’s less about doing everything right and more about letting your own truth be enough.

When things get real, do you tend to look outward for instructions, or are you learning to listen to what your own body is telling you? 👇

Looking back at photos from my own postpartum, I’m reminded why I protect my clients’ peace so fiercely. When you are in this bubble, everyone wants to “come see the baby”—but very few people are ready to see the laundry, the leaking, and the raw reality of the person who just birthed it.

I’m an open book and I live for the connection and stories we share—it’s why I do this work. But my work would be unmet if I didn’t also remind you that healing isn’t a performance. You don’t owe anyone an ‘aesthetic’ postpartum.

If you are supporting someone in this stage, here is the sign for the figurative door. If you can’t check ALL these boxes, come back another time:

✅ HEALTHY. No “it’s just allergies” or “runny noses” allowed. Period.

✅ HELPFUL. Don’t ask what needs to be done. Fold the laundry, wash the dishes, walk a pet, take out the trash, or drop off food. If you aren’t there to lighten the load, you’re adding to it.

✅ HUMBLE. Keep the unsolicited advice and “well-meaning” suggestions to yourself. Your only job is to uplift the crap out of her.

You can be a “people person” and still need a closed door. Your healing isn’t a public update—unless you want it to be—it’s your business. 🕊️

✨ Moms & Doulas: What was the one thing a visitor did that felt like actual support? Or the visitor comment that made you hold your boundary? I love hearing these stories. 👇

Early labor can be a strange phase.
Sometimes it’s hours of “is this actually it?”

Contractions might be irregular, mild, or easy to brush off for a while.

So what’s the best thing to do?

Ignore it... until you can’t ignore it anymore.

Seriously.

✨ Eat something.
✨ Watch a show.
✨ Go for a curb walk.
✨ Snuggle with your loves.
✨ Take a very deserved nap.

Get that oxytocin flowingggg.

And then... when you can’t ignore it anymore -

Try out a little living room labor dance party 💃🕺🏽
Dancing during labor can:

🌕 reduce pain
🌕 create more space in the pelvis
🌕 help baby come down
🌕 help baby rotate into the position they need
🌕 increase oxytocin & endorphins
(your own built-in pain relief ayeeee)

All of this can help labor flow more smoothly and efficiently 👌

There’s even a small randomized study where first-time mothers were assigned either standard care or a “dance during labor” group. Those who used the dancing position for at least 30 minutes reported lower pain levels and higher satisfaction with their birth.

Early labor is often a “let’s try this... now let’s try that” situation.
Having a few ideas in your back pocket goes a long way.

Save this for when early labor starts.

If you’re pregnant, or plan to be, and want to actually feel prepared for moments like this.. that’s exactly what we practice in class 🥰

We break down what labor can look like, what helps, and how to move through it with confidence.

My next Seven Week Series runs April 9th - May 21st 6-8:30pm.
