Ever wonder where the name "Harvest Moon" actually comes from? šŸŒ•āœØ It’s my Grandma’s heavenly birthday today and it feels like the perfect time to share the story behind the name šŸŒ•ā˜˜ļø

My Grandma Jan and Papa Gene met at a lounge called Harvest Moon in their twenties. Growing up, their stories about this place were the kind of magic you hear about in old movies. I loved hearing their stories so much - the way a small spot in the 50s started a whole legacy. I always told myself that if I ever opened a business, I’d name it Harvest Moon. Five years ago, I finally had the honor.

I wish Papa got to see what I created with the name & I’m so glad Grandma did 🄹 She has been my biggest supporter of all time, if I said I was going to ā€œinsert wild idea hereā€ she’d lift me up like a one-woman cheer squad. With her, I could be anything.

Every day, but especially today, I’m celebrating her šŸŽ‰

Happy Birthday in heaven, Grandma Jan. I cherished you in every moment of today. You’re in every birth I attend, every heart I hold, and every moon I see šŸŒ•āœØ

Harvest Moon isn’t just a name; it’s a tribute to love, dedication, and support. Miss you forever, Grandma & Papa. I love you a bushel & a peck & a hug around the neck šŸ’•šŸŒ•

Day 2: The Accordion šŸŖ— (How Your Uterus Actually Pushes)
Being a doula and birth educator means seeing birth metaphors everywhere—even at a homeschool co-op craft table šŸŽØ

Watching the kids (& myself let’s be honest) make these paper accordions, I couldn’t stop thinking about the uterus.

Think of the top of your uterus (the fundus) as these sturdy pleats. During labor, these muscles aren’t just ā€œsqueezingā€ and letting go; they are retracting. Every time they contract, the fibers shorten and thicken, ā€œratchetingā€ upward and staying there. Just like this accordion being compressed, the muscle mass is migrating—building a thick, powerful ā€œengineā€ at the top. šŸ› ļø

✨ Why this matters for the pushing phase:
We’ve all heard the advice to ā€œpush like you’re having a bowel movement,ā€ but if we only focus on the ā€œexit,ā€ we might miss the power of the ā€œengine.ā€

Physiology is universal, but the experience is individual. Whether your body triggers a Fetal Ejection Reflex (FER) or you are more consciously directing that energy, the goal is the same: stop fighting the ā€œexitā€ and start working *with* the ā€œengine.ā€

Instead of straining against your body, we want to harness the power of that ā€œbunched-upā€ accordion at the top. When we use diaphragmatic breathing, our breath acts like a piston. It creates internal pressure that works with that thickened fundus to move the baby down. It’s not about ā€œholding your breath and pushing from your faceā€ā€”it’s about directing your energy to meet that incredible uterine pull. šŸ’Ø

Welcome to Day 2 of 15 Days of Daily Birth Metaphors. Finding the power in the mundane. Because seriously—when you’re constipated, no one ever says, ā€œJust push like you’re having a baby!ā€ It doesn’t translate, so why do we do it the other way around? šŸ’©

Reminding you that you can do hard things šŸ‘

If you know, you knowšŸ•µļøā€ā™€ļø postpartum is a glamorous journey friends

Being a doula & birth educator means seeing birth metaphors everywhere. POV: You’re in a car wash but mentally you’re 8-10cm dilated šŸ˜…

The overwhelm + possible sensory overload, the loss of control, and the feeling of being pummeled from all sides while you sit there in neutral unable to get away... yeah, that’s Transition šŸ˜…

It’s that ā€œbig phaseā€ where the hormones are surging, the shakes hit, you’re suddenly too hot then too cold, and that voice in your head starts whispering, ā€œI can’t possibly do this.ā€ 😳

But then—the water clears. You realize the waves aren’t just happening to you; your body is actually doing the work & CRUSHING IT. Maybe you have a big emotional release. You find that second wind, the ā€œRinseā€ cycle kicks in, and you’re ready to bring a human into the world. 🌊✨

Welcome to Day 1 of 15 Days of Daily Birth Metaphors. Finding the power in the mundane. Because if we don’t laugh, we may cry???

I am currently 0% ā€œover here making a pie,ā€ but this message is still 100% true. 🄧

Happy Pi Day! I’m re-sharing this reel from a few months ago because while a pie has a recipe, your birth and postpartum journey doesn’t—and that’s actually the point.

In the voiceover here, I’m talking about how birth prep isn’t just about memorizing scenarios or logistics. It’s about learning how to find your ā€œroutes of safetyā€ when things feel uneasy. It’s about realizing that you are the inner guidance you’ve been looking for.

I love the visual of making this pie, but let’s be honest: today I’m much more likely to be found reaching for a store-bought slice than kneading dough. 🫠

Whether you’re in a season of transition or just beginning to plant the seeds for your birth, remember: it’s less about doing everything right and more about letting your own truth be enough.

When things get real, do you tend to look outward for instructions, or are you learning to listen to what your own body is telling you? šŸ‘‡

Looking back at photos from my own postpartum, I’m reminded why I protect my clients’ peace so fiercely. When you are in this bubble, everyone wants to ā€œcome see the babyā€ā€”but very few people are ready to see the laundry, the leaking, and the raw reality of the person who just birthed it.

I’m an open book and I live for the connection and stories we share—it’s why I do this work. But my work would be unmet if I didn’t also remind you that healing isn’t a performance. You don’t owe anyone an ā€˜aesthetic’ postpartum.

If you are supporting someone in this stage, here is the sign for the figurative door. If you can’t check ALL these boxes, come back another time:

āœ… HEALTHY. No ā€œit’s just allergiesā€ or ā€œrunny nosesā€ allowed. Period.

āœ… HELPFUL. Don’t ask what needs to be done. Fold the laundry, wash the dishes, walk a pet, take out the trash, or drop off food. If you aren’t there to lighten the load, you’re adding to it.

āœ… HUMBLE. Keep the unsolicited advice and ā€œwell-meaningā€ suggestions to yourself. Your only job is to uplift the crap out of her.

You can be a ā€œpeople personā€ and still need a closed door. Your healing isn’t a public update—unless you want it to be—it’s your business. šŸ•Šļø

✨ Moms & Doulas: What was the one thing a visitor did that felt like actual support? Or the visitor comment that made you hold your boundary? I love hearing these stories. šŸ‘‡

Early labor can be a strange phase.
Sometimes it’s hours of ā€œis this actually it?ā€

Contractions might be irregular, mild, or easy to brush off for a while.

So what’s the best thing to do?

Ignore it... until you can’t ignore it anymore.

Seriously.

✨ Eat something.
✨ Watch a show.
✨ Go for a curb walk.
✨ Snuggle with your loves.
✨ Take a very deserved nap.

Get that oxytocin flowingggg.

And then... when you can’t ignore it anymore -

Try out a little living room labor dance party šŸ’ƒšŸ•ŗšŸ½
Dancing during labor can:

šŸŒ• reduce pain
šŸŒ• create more space in the pelvis
šŸŒ• help baby come down
šŸŒ• help baby rotate into the position they need
šŸŒ• increase oxytocin & endorphins
(your own built-in pain relief ayeeee)

All of this can help labor flow more smoothly and efficiently šŸ‘Œ

There’s even a small randomized study where first-time mothers were assigned either standard care or a ā€œdance during laborā€ group. Those who used the dancing position for at least 30 minutes reported lower pain levels and higher satisfaction with their birth.

Early labor is often a ā€œlet’s try this... now let’s try thatā€ situation.
Having a few ideas in your back pocket goes a long way.

Save this for when early labor starts.

If you’re pregnant, or plan to be, and want to actually feel prepared for moments like this.. that’s exactly what we practice in class 🄰

We break down what labor can look like, what helps, and how to move through it with confidence.

My next Seven Week Series runs April 9th - May 21st 6-8:30pm.

When we practice labor positions in class, they’re not random — each one serves a purpose šŸ”„

These 6 positions show a few different ways positions can support labor.

šŸŒ• Some are more restful, giving the body space to relax and soften.

šŸŒ• Some are more active, helping encourage descent and movement.

šŸŒ• Some are asymmetrical, which can create a little more room in the pelvis.

šŸŒ• Some help balance your body, giving baby more of a chance to get into position.

šŸŒ• Some use pressure receptors in the body that can strengthen waves, help posterior babies turn, release endorphins & more.

The goal isn’t to memorize positions or carry around an exhaustive list — it’s to understand what they can do.

It helps to have a few ideas in your back pocket before labor starts because labor tends to be a bit of a ā€œlet’s try this… now let’s try thatā€ situation.

You won’t find one perfect position (you’ll likely use many throughout). Having options and responding to what your body and baby need in the moment works best.

These are just a few of the ones I practice and use with my doula clients and in my childbirth classes.

We practice and talk about positions like these so they’re not brand new when things get going & so you have a feel for how and when to use them.

🫶

My Seven Week Series is coming up soon if you want to learn and practice things like this together — details in the link in bio šŸŒ•

The way she looked at me I CANNOT 😭 this precious bundle of love snuggled her head and napped on me, and this is how she woke up. This is part of my job?? PINCH ME 😭

This postpartum visit was way later than usual due to holidays & sickness between our families - but man oh man I am so happy I got to see this sweet family and their precious baby girl last night. I am beyond proud of her mom & dad 🄹

Postpartum visits that wrap up our birth doula relationship are always so bitter sweet. Wish somehow these journeys didn’t have to end, but that would mean my clients being pregnant forever, whichhhhhh I wouldn’t wish upon even my worst enemy, soooo alas, you’ll all just live in my heart forever mmmkay? ā™„ļøā™„ļøā™„ļø

Funny how supporting other people through vulnerable moments steadies you, too. I’m grateful for this work.
