It was fun to watch Kiriann compete at the Pacific Northwest Jr. Olympics last Saturday in Eugene. (Part of why i’ve i’ll be out of the clinic for a week) She cleared 10’11”. Not a personal best but she took 17th out of 53 girls! So proud of her and all the hard work she has put into this!

This story, and the lessons within, never get old.
Not the best for your body going days without sleep, but the consistent steady pace aspect is gold.

Just before the start of the 544-mile Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon in 1983, one particular runner caught the attention of the Australian media: a 61-year-old potato farmer named Cliff Young. He had shown up before the race wearing overalls and work boots, telling journalists that he had trained in his large rubber boots and had spent much of his childhood chasing after sheep, sometimes for days without rest.

Soon after the race began, Cliff Young fell behind the other runners and seemed on track to finish dead last. But after getting just two hours of sleep the first night, Young got back up and started running — and didn't stop. While the other runners stopped each night to sleep, Young kept moving continuously at his slow pace for five days straight. "I'm just an old tortoise," he said. "I have to keep going to stay in front." In the end, Young won the race in record time, smashing the previous mark by two whole days and leaving the entire world stunned.

This is the incredible story of Cliff Young: https://bit.ly/3NNLomt

Kiri’s jump at 10’6”. Unfortunately I did not catch her PR of 11’ on Video. 😏 What I appreciate about pole vault is it’s not one of those H.S. track events that kids just jump into to fill a required event. It takes a lot of skill and a whole lot of practice.

This is Steven, PT in Fernley. I wanted to say congratulations to my daughters, Evven, our part time PTP aid in Fernley, and Kiri. They took first and second place at state track in pole vault. Both set personal records, Kiri at 11 feet and Evven at 9 feet 6 inches, despite having a muscle strain in her quad. They have worked hard and it paid off!

Taylor O'Daye is working towards her Nurse Practitioners degree, she was a critical part of PTPnv doing every job there was with aplomb and a smile. Well done!!
We’re so proud of you!

I am particularly proud of Taylor diving into the political arena, doing tough work on the council while excelling in grad school.

Fantastic news for one of WNC's students! Nursing student Taylor O’Daye has been selected as the 2023 Sam Lieberman Regents’ Scholarship Award recipient for Western. As a member of the Walker River Paiute Tribe, Taylor aspires to improve health care on her reservation and serve as a role model for Native American children. For this honor, Taylor will receive a $5,000 scholarship from NSHE. Way to go, Taylor!

AS or ankylosing spondylitis is an autoimmune disease more common in men than women which can be quite debilitating in its progression. Working to maintain fitness, mobility, while minimizing inflammatory damage can be key components to managing AS effects.

Even with chronic pain, it’s important to stay active with AS. Your workout may not look the same as it did, but it’s better than staying still.

One of my patients announced her ACL tear on social media with this cartoon.🤣 I thought it very fitting because most patients will say, “I heard a pop in my knee” at the time of injury.
Although the audible phenomena can occur with knee trauma it does not always mean structural damage has occurred. Often times the “pop” is not accompanied by structural damage rather results from a mechanical shift in the joint causing pain. If this is the case the problem can be rapidly reduced without surgical intervention. At PTP we are trained to detect such a thing and help you determine the best course of action to reduce your pain and improve your function. Contact us in South Reno or Fernley if you have any questions. Be safe and have a wonderful new year!
