Have we turned sugar into a villain?

Alzheimer’s researcher Dr. John Lewis says the word “sugar” may be one of the most misused words in health.

In this clip, he explains why…and why his research on an aloe-derived sugar called polymannose led him to question some of our assumptions.

Moringa is often marketed as a health supplement.

Salmonella is not.

CDC and several states are investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to recalled Mogo brand moringa capsules.

If you have'em, toss'em.

Channeling my inner Molly Maguire.
Family lore says one of my relatives got trapped in the coal mines and survived by eating a donkey.
True?
No idea.
As someone who loves donkeys, I’ve spent years hoping that part of the story got exaggerated somewhere along the way.

Well, public health won't be running out of things to talk about this week!

Yesterday, the Trump administration signed an executive order directing federal agencies to align with an HHS assessment that could narrow the list of vaccines routinely recommended for all children and shift some decisions more toward individualized risk discussions between parents and physicians.

What's the 1st question you thought of after reading this?

A 24-year-old student in Russia recently died after falling 330 feet from a cliff while taking a selfie.

It sounds like a bizarre headline...but it's not an isolated one.

There is actually an epidemiology of "killer selfies."

In my conversation with forensic pathologist Roger Byard, we talk about the countries reporting the most selfie-related deaths, who is most likely to become a victim, and the surprisingly predictable ways these tragedies happen.

But it's 2026, and selfies are here to stay.
That said..., have you ever injured yourself or nearly injured yourself trying to capture the perfect selfie?

Feel free to share! I feel like I've come close...very close.

It's one of my earlier episodes but well worth it!)

What really happens to men's s*x lives as they age?

In this episode of Causes or Cures, I speak with urologist and s*xual medicine specialist Dr. Judson Brandeis about ED, aging, “s*xspan,” intimacy, nitric oxide, supplements, Vi**ra, pe**le enhancement, and the science (and hype) surrounding men’s s*xual health.

Tough week for cruises, man!

A British cruise ship carrying more than 1,700 passengers and crew was temporarily confined in Bordeaux after a gastrointestinal outbreak, later confirmed as norovirus.

Norovirus and cruise ships are like an iconic duo.

The good news?
Most norovirus infections are miserable but short lived.

The bad news?
Norovirus spreads like it has herculian ambitions to take over the world.

This is not related to the hantavirus concerns on another cruise ship.

We’re all interested in reducing chronic inflammation, right?
But what actually works?
And how fast can we see a change?

Dr. Amrita Vijay tested 3 dietary approaches over 6 weeks: a prebiotic fiber called inulin, omega 3 supplementation, and a synbiotic combining kefir* with prebiotic fiber.

All three reduced inflammatory markers compared to the control group, but the synbiotic approach showed broader effects across multiple markers.

(And yup, the gut microbiome has entered the chat yet again.)

Tune into the full Causes or Cures podcast episode (link in comments) where we dive deeper into the findings and what may explain why the synbiotic combination performed better.

*Puttin’ the smart money on you makin’ a kefir smoothie after this. 🤷‍♀️😉

In this segment of Public Health is Weird…

In the late 1800s, some milk producers added formaldehyde to milk to slow spoilage and keep it tasting “fresh.”

Yes. Embalming fluid.

It became known as “embalmed milk,” which sounds fake but unfortunately was very real.

The scandal helped push modern food safety laws forward after some infants became sick and died.

Public health lesson:
Food preservation didn’t always mean food safety.

And yup, I woulda called it Co**se Cream. 🧟‍♂️🥛
