Nemours KidsHealth - the Web's most visited site about children's health
Hi families! Well, these crazy days (weeks, months) continue and the physical and mental health of our children is one of our greatest concerns. When can we see our friends? Will we get sick? Why can’t I go to dance class? I’m tired washing my hands! What is corona virus anyway? Fear of the unknown creates anxiety.
Although many communities are starting to gradually reopen, this is not the time to let our guard down. Keep wearing your masks, washing your hands and maintaining healthy distancing. Choose outings that are truly important and skip the quick trips to the convenience store. Don’t visit Grandma & Grandpa unless it’s outdoors and there is no physical contact (bummer!). Small children will naturally not follow physical distancing when they see a loved one.
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Cabin fever is at its peak and your children can sense your anxiety as well as become anxious themselves. Stay calm on the outside even if you are about to explode on the inside. Don’t argue with your partner in earshot of your children. Turn off the ever-stressful news reports. Keep a regular schedule that includes significant positive breaks with your kids, giving them your undivided attention. If both parents are working at home, create a schedule which allows each parent some uninterrupted work time as well as quality time with the kids. It’s normal for kids to act up and become more clingy during times of stress. If you feel that your child’s anxiety is excessive, please call our office. We’re here to help.
We will return to the new normal! We are here for you in the office, curbside, phone or video chat. We continue to have all of you in our prayers.

We care about your family! Your child’s health and safety is always our top priority so we’re here for you 24/7 during this topsy-turvy time.
Our office is a safe environment. We sanitize regularly, we all wear a mask and healthy kiddos are seen in a separate area from sick kids. You will not wait in the waiting room at any time.
Recommendation/guidelines for weekday appointments:
• Vaccines: Per CDC guidelines, children needing vaccines should keep their well check appointment. Skipping vaccines can lead to a secondary public health issue.
• Sick kids: Make an office or tele-med appointment with Dr. Porter. We can even do a “drive-by” visit in your car.
• Well checks not requiring vaccines: For your child’s safety, we currently recommend that you reschedule routine well visits and sports physicals. When Covid-19 and its restrictions are over or have eased up, we will have you covered.
After-hours appointments (nights and weekends):
• Call the office and there will be instructions. Dr. Porter will personally call or tele-med you, any time of day or night.
You can call our office at any time (24/7) for a weekday or after hours visit with Dr. Porter. 972-235-6911
Your family is very important to us. Stay healthy!

Dear Families,
Due to the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, here are a few updates on our office protocols and the latest CDC recommendations set in place to keep you and your family safe.
Office Protocols
We are taking the following steps to reduce your contact with surfaces and other patients during your office visit.
• We have removed toys, bead tables, books, magazines and stickers from our office. This helps reduce the chances of children passing along potential pathogens and makes it easier for us to sanitize the rooms.
• Upon arrival, we are putting patients directly into exam rooms and bypassing the waiting room whenever possible.
• We continue to separate our well visit times from our sick visit times.
• We continue to sanitize our exam rooms after each visit.
• We will ask every person who has a cough to wear a mask upon entering our office and not to remove it until they have left the building.
• Any of our employees who become ill will be allowed paid sick leave until they have fully recovered.
• We are following all guidelines suggested by the CDC on reducing the spread of viruses.
The CDC recommends doing the following to protect yourselves and others:
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a household cleaning spray or wipe.
• The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory viruses, including COVID-19.
• Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
• If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
• Do not visit elderly friends or family members if you have a fever or cough.
Testing for COVID-19
At present, Texas has a limited number of test kits available and therefore the local health departments are regulating who qualifies for testing. They are presently using the following criteria:
I. If someone has a fever or signs of lower respiratory illness (cough or shortness of breath) and that person has had close contact with a laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patient within 14 days of symptom onset.
2. If someone has a fever or signs of lower respiratory illness (cough or shortness of breath) and that person has a
history of travel from an affected geographic area shown to have person to person transmission within 14 days of symptom onset or that person has risk factors that put them at a higher risk of poor outcomes.
3. If someone has fever or signs of lower respiratory illness (cough or shortness of breath) requiring hospitalization and no source of exposure has been identified and other causes of respiratory illness have been ruled out.
Thankfully, COVID-19 illness in children has been generally mild. Often the symptoms are similar to a routine head cold with low fever, nasal congestion and a cough. So, even if your child has mild symptoms, restrict their contact with the elderly, those who are immune-suppressed and those who have chronic health conditions.
Children who have higher fevers, a severe cough, shortness of breath or labored breathing should be evaluated quickly by a physician. If you have further questions, please see the links below or call our office.
