I spent years trying to figure out who I really was while at the same time being so concerned with how others in life saw me. Would they approve of what I was doing? What would they think? What would they say? Would they like the “real” me and would I be good enough?

That career path you chose at 22? You can pivot.

That relationship full of tears and betrayal? You can move forward.

The life you built to meet other people’s approval and expectations without ever asking “is this what I even want?” You can rebuild/remodel it.

And that’s not to say any of these things are easy. Change is often hard and scary - but it won’t be that way forever. The cost of staying stuck is hard and scary too. When you ignore your inner knowing in favor of meeting other peoples' expectations, you start to lose touch with your authentic self.

Sometimes we forget or don’t even realize all the choices and options we have in life. Sometimes we need help with seeing a way out or building faith and trust in ourselves or finding the courage to do something totally different.

When stress hits, what’s your go-to response?

Do you avoid? Eat or drink junk? Numb out with media?

We all have default patterns when it comes to stress - some people fall apart or become paralyzed under pressure. Even when we are victimized, some may slip into a longer term mentality of being a victim, only able to experience the emotions that come from seeing the unfairness of the situation or feeling that they're always dealt the worst hand.

Here’s the problem though - sometimes our default pattern keeps us focused on what’s happening TO us only, instead of or additionally what we can do about it. This is understandable AND we can change this through working on developing new patterns and ways of responding.

We can work on regulating our nervous system and reminding ourselves we can always figure out what we need.

We can redefine how we choose to see the unknown and look for opportunities to move forward.

We can work on building trust in ourselves and in our body.

When we think about mental health and healing from trauma, we typically think serious clinical interventions. Serious problems require serious solutions, right?

While those are sometimes needed and helpful, we can also overlook or discount the simpler parts of healing....
..such as having FUN, moving your body and being silly!!

When you bring the aspect of play into whatever task you’re doing, it changes the way you process that task.

It rewires the brain towards states of safety, connection and possibility.

It helps break you out of rigid, trauma-based patterns and shift into a more light-hearted, positive state.

The value of working with a creative, holistic-focused therapist & coach is getting the best of both worlds: the more “serious” deep dives into processing trauma when needed and the non-conventional approaches to trauma healing like creative play, expression and somatic therapy movement.

We are not just a bunch of symptoms or diagnoses to be treated. The body, emotions, creativity, spirit and soul all play crucial roles in mental health recovery!

Healing from trauma does not have to be difficult and painful. It can feel light-hearted, creative, expressive and life-affirming too.

Do you have someone in your life who is able to be present with you and really see, hear and understand where you're coming from?

Not everyone in life has the capacity to be present with our feelings. Not everyone will be able to hold our fears, worries, grief or pain. Yet it is this simple act of compassion that can bring about profound healing for someone going through a difficult time.

When someone can see you for who you really are without distraction, urgency, rushing, judgment, reaction, or trying to change you, so much freedom results from this.

Deep healing comes from being seen with compassion, heard with compassion and understood with compassion. This act of compassion frees someone's heart and eases their pain, no matter what kind of pain it is.

It is my honor to be able to show up in a compassionate way and help others find themselves again after feeling broken down, stuck, trapped, lost, and in the dark.

One thing I have learned: more thinking rarely solves the problem. We need other tools to break the cycle.

The truth is most problems aren’t solved by more thinking. It may feel productive and like the practical thing to do - but we end up getting stuck second-guessing things, replaying “what if” scenarios in our mind, and worrying about things outside of our control.

Overthinking is like the mental equivalent of quicksand - the more you struggle to think your way out, the deeper you sink. I understand this pattern well.

In our fast paced busy culture we fall into the trap of believing we have to do more or work harder to solve our problems. Sometimes it’s about doing less or doing something different.
