We’re excited to share that Melissa Howell has joined LEAP’s Board of Directors! Melissa is a pediatric nurse practitioner who has traveled with LEAP on several missions to Zimbabwe, Haiti, Belize, and India over the last 14 years. In her volunteer work with LEAP, she stays focused on keeping the care we provide grounded with cultural sensitivity and respect while providing excellent care to the families we serve
Melissa grew up in the north Dallas area. She has been a pediatric nurse practitioner for 3 decades and is currently Manager for Advanced Practice at Children’s Health System of Texas.
Melissa and her husband Dan have seven (now adult) children. Most are still local. As you might imagine, the number of grandchildren is on a steady incline! She is an active member in their church where she serves in the special needs class every week.

Last week, our Mexico team returned from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. The team, led by Dr. Alejandra Garcia de Mitchell, provided free ear reconstruction surgeries for 13 children with microtia, which included 1st, 2nd, and 3rd stages. We had a graduating class of 6 children who completed their final reconstruction and received their LEAP hat. We are grateful for all the dedication and love from our volunteers. Thank you to our longtime partner Xóchitl Palacios and our hosts Clinica Cristo Medico and Club Rotario Ixtapa for your continued support!

Our Mexico team is on the second day of surgeries. It continually amazes us how far the families travel to be evaluated and have their child’s surgery. As we learned this weekend, several of the families stay in the same local hotel and have become friends and support for each other. Anna and her parents are heading home to Ukraine. Her surgery went well, and she will receive additional care with laser therapy in Poland. Thank you to everyone who supported Anna and her parents during their time in the US!
