From June 21st to 24th, scouts in Troop 422 camped at Fort McAllister, Georgia. We drove for six hours and eventually arrived to the campsite at about 2 o’clock. Tom, the acting Senior Patrol Leader, instructed the boys to set up their gear and get ready to cook dinner. The three scout patrols and leader patrol proceeded to do so. We all had a smooth start to the campout. Next morning the scouts woke up, cooked breakfast and were informed that we would be going on a 5 mile hike. Not everyone was too thrilled. Josh and Tom led the group through the woods that harbored countless spider webs and crabs. Eventually we arrived at the Fort McAllister Museum. The scouts entertained themselves with a water fountain that shot up so high it landed in the smaller water fountain beside it, while the adults bought tickets for the Fort admission. Everyone viewed a short film, walked through the museum, and then went outside to see the fort. The scouts loved exploring the intricate tunnels under the giant mounds of dirt. When we were about to leave, we heard there was a musket shooting demonstration about to happen so we stayed for that. By this point, everyone was starving so we just HAD to get back to camp so we could eat. Lunch passed and soon it was time for dinner and then bed. We needed our rest for our adventures the next day. Once we all woke up at 7 o’clock, we quickly ate breakfast, packed lunch and headed off to Tybee Island. The sun was scorching and the only relief was the salty ocean water. We spent 4 hours splashing, wrestling, building sand castles, and enjoying the beach. At one point in the water, a small boy somehow floated into our clump of scouts. As any good Troop 422 member would do, we introduced ourselves, asked him his name, and asked if he was interested in scouts, etc… He, without hesitation, called us a bunch of idiots, jerks, fatties, and sasquatches and informed us that he is an 8 year old black belt in karate. All of us laughed it off and went on with our day, not replicating his behavior. Once we got back to camp, we needed some rest. When it came time for dinner, the adult cooked a feast including sausage, corn, potatoes, beans, rolls, and YES crabs that they caught earlier this trip. They kindly invited the three kid patrols over once they were done with their helpings. This feast was followed by a campfire, where all four patrols were required to perform a skit. The night was filled with laughter and scary stories. This campout was overflowing with fellowship, great memories, and TICKS! Mr. Starr, Mr. Wise, and the other adult leaders did a great job planning the June campout.
