I've been pretty quiet here on IG while getting so excited to continue expanding in-person lactation support in RVA ❤️

🌟 Second TUESDAYS 🌟
🌟 Last SUNDAYS 12pm🌟

Are you a breast/chestfeeding parent? An exclusive pumper? A tandem nurser? A combination feeder? If you are feeding your baby human milk, you are welcome to join our lactation support circle to discuss all things lactation and nursing.

Starting in January and recurring monthly, we are expanding our free peer support circle that is facilitated by a Certified Lactation Counselor to include a weekend option!

It meets the second Tuesday of every month at 10:00 am & the last Sunday of the month at 12:00 pm.

Hosted at the MyBirth studio, the circle is an opportunity for you (and your partner, if you’d like!) to safely share your experiences, ask questions, and offer and receive support. Parents are welcome to attend for the full time or to drop in as they are able to come. The MyBirth Community Lactation Circle is a free support group.

This group is open to all lactating parents, not just the clients and students of MyBirth.

Unless your healthcare provider, sleep specialist or sleep consultant is informing you that using a feed-play-sleep routine is associated with early breastfeeding cessation you are being let down.

Feeding to sleep is the biological norm and continuing to do so past 6 months and into the toddler years is not a sleep problem or negative sleep association and is actually associated with prolonged breastfeeding.

Feed-play-sleep jeopardises the breastfeeding relationship and that should be spelled out before any parent is expected to follow it as a recommendation for their family.

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving? 🍂 🥮

As the holidays approach, it's a good time to check in on your feeding goals and routines!

Holiday travel, events and excitement can be opportunities for trying a new nursing position, exploring new foods for babies 6+ months and spending time together.

They can also be a source of stress as parents face a new way to celebrate with a need for more flexibility and time to stay in tune with little ones.

Remember:
🌟 You are the expert on your baby and your body
🌟 Keep baby close & keep the milk flowing

Holiday Suggestions:
🌟 Babywearing keeps baby close for connection & early identification of feeding/sleepy cues
🌟 Say no thanks to unsolicited advice that does not align with you values and instincts
🌟 Say yes please to unloading tasks and errands that allow you to rest and prioritize your needs

Offering in-home and virtual consultations, based in Richmond, VA.

Breastfeeding/chestfeeding works best when baby is fed at their best time ⏲️😌😍

Noting these specific behaviors and patterns that help you and baby have calmer, more effective milk time!

When baby is in the optimal state for learning and feeding, they will have longer periods of concentrations, usually during REM (rapid eye movement sleep) and quiet alert states.

Babies show more cues when they are close to the source of the milk and the breastfeeding parent is more likely to pick up on these cues.

When feeding cues are missed or the state is not optimal, infants fuss or sleep at the breast - leading parents to think the baby “doesn’t like” the breast or is “too tired” to nurse.

🌟 5 states that all infants go through & when to feed baby for the smoothest ride!

Deep sleep - no movement under eyelids, body still

REM sleep - happens about every 30 minutes during sleep, baby may twitch, jerk and eyes move under closed lids.

Quiet alert- awake, still body, fixed eye focus - great time to try feeding

Active alert - awake, growing restlessness
Although moving hands to mouth & open-eyed rooting are often shown in pictures as an "early" cue, *some babies go through this state very quickly and begin crying*

Crying- this is a very late cue and it's best to change their state by calming and soothing baby before attempting a feeding!
