that sickle cell disorders affected 1 in 103 Virginia deliveries in 2024? Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder where red blood cells become hard, sticky, and shaped like a sickle, which can block blood flow and cause serious health issues.

If both parents carry the sickle cell trait, there's a 75% chance their baby won’t have the disease—but a 50% chance the baby will carry the trait. If you have the trait, talk to your doctor about your options. Follow the VNPC to learn how we're promoting healthy deliveries and strong families.
