that pregnancy is one of the most dangerous times for victims of domestic violence? In Virginia, nearly 3% of women with a recent live birth reported violence by a partner before pregnancy, and national studies show that up to 6% experience abuse during pregnancy. Violence during pregnancy is linked to preterm birth, low birth weight, and even maternal death.

In fact, homicide is a leading cause of pregnancy-associated deaths in Virginia, accounting for 13% of cases. Follow along with the VNPC to learn about how we are preventing maternal mortality and promoting healthy families.

Moms, we see you. Babies, we’ve got you.

Governor of Virginia Glenn Youngkin just launched Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA) — a first-of-its-kind state-run food support program to help families during the federal shutdown.
Starting November 3, families who rely on SNAP will receive weekly food benefits directly to their EBT cards — funded by Virginia’s budget surplus.

This means no interruptions in access to groceries for over 850,000 Virginians, including moms, babies, and caregivers. Plus, an extra $1 million is going to food banks to help bridge any gaps.
Because no child should go hungry, and no parent should have to worry.

the Virginia Neonatal Perinatal Collaborative (VNPC) is implementing an initiative to improve care for mothers with substance use disorder and infants exposed to substances? The EBDC SUD project—short for Evidence-Based Dyad Care for Substance Use Disorder—is a quality improvement effort that began in June. Since then, we've been collecting baseline data, and the initial results are now ready to share.

On average, 82.4% of substance-exposed infants are discharged to a birth parent, and 76.2% of mothers with opioid use disorder have received or been referred to recovery treatment services. Hospitals are also tracking provider and nursing education on substance use, as well as patient counseling efforts. To learn more, check out the new EBDC baseline data report available now on our website.

that in 2024, 1 in every 1,075 pregnant women in Virginia were diagnosed with breast cancer? While rare, breast cancer during pregnancy can lead to serious complications—and in 2022, cancer accounted for 14.3% of pregnancy-associated deaths in the state.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, and early detection can significantly improve outcomes. This October, the Virginia Neonatal Perinatal Collaborative is observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month, advocating for healthier moms and families.
